Archaeological and environmental evidence indicates that people from East Polynesia reached Aotearoa/New Zealand in the late 1200s. Settlement required ocean navigation across long distances and then rapid adaptation to a cooler climate than most of Polynesia. This start point set the conditions for later waka traditions, regional communities, and ultimately iwi (tribal) formation.
In the first century or so after arrival (around 1250–1300 onward), Māori communities hunted moa intensively and used moa bone, feathers, and skin for tools and clothing. These large birds provided a major, accessible food source while people explored new landscapes and established communities. Heavy use of moa became one of the defining features of early ("Archaic") settlement life.
The Kaharoa eruption from the Tarawera volcanic complex (dated to about 1314 ± 12 years) deposited a widespread ash layer in the North Island. Archaeologists use this tephra (volcanic ash) as a dating tool: in some places, evidence of Polynesian occupation appears directly above it, helping narrow the timing of early settlement. This strengthens the case that reliable settlement evidence falls after about 1250 CE.
Māori oral histories describe migrations from an origin place called Hawaiki and the arrival of notable waka (voyaging canoes). These traditions became a key way communities explained ancestry, rights to land, and relationships among groups. Over time, waka associations were used to link hapū and iwi through shared whakapapa (genealogy).
As people became established, kūmara (sweet potato) gardening expanded where climate allowed, especially in the North Island and warmer coastal zones. Māori improved soils by adding sand or gravel and organized gardens into mounds and rows, leaving visible archaeological traces. Developing reliable storage, including rua kūmara (storage pits), helped communities manage seasonal shortages and support larger settlements.
In Taranaki, traditions link iwi to major waka (including Tokomaru, Kurahaupō, and Aotea), and Te Ara notes that the contemporary tribal structure of the region was established from the 16th century. This reflects a broader pattern: regional populations organized into iwi with named identities connected to whakapapa and territory. These developments shaped how communities defended land, arranged marriages, and negotiated relationships with neighbors.
From around the 1500s, many communities expanded the building of pā—defended settlements using features like palisades, ditches, and terraces. Pā helped protect people and stored food (including kūmara) during raids or disputes. This period is often described as part of a shift toward a more settled, territory-based way of life in many regions.
Moa remains are common in early sites but do not appear in middens later than about 1550 CE, indicating the birds were gone from the human food record by then. The loss of moa reduced an important protein source and increased the importance of gardening, fishing, and other resources. This shift contributed to changing settlement patterns and food strategies across regions.
Māori social organization centered on whānau (extended families) within hapū (sub-tribes), and broader iwi identities often formed around shared ancestors and major historical events. Leadership roles such as ariki and rangatira helped coordinate land use, alliances, and conflict management. These structures supported stronger, more clearly defined communities as competition for resources grew in some areas.
Te Ara records that Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri arrived in the Te Tau Ihu (top of the South Island) in the late 16th century and came to dominate a very large territory for about two centuries. Their expansion, and later pressures from surrounding tribes, shows how iwi boundaries and identities could change through migration, intermarriage, and conflict. This is one example of ongoing iwi formation and re-formation in the centuries before sustained European contact.
In October 1769, James Cook reached New Zealand and made landfall at Poverty Bay, beginning sustained British observation and mapping of the coastline. Cook’s initial contacts with Māori included violent incidents as well as later trade and communication assisted by the Polynesian navigator Tupaia. These encounters marked a major transition: Māori iwi and hapū now faced an expanding European presence that would reshape politics, trade, and conflict in the decades to follow.
By early 1770, Cook had sailed around and charted the coastlines of both the North and South Islands and then left New Zealand waters. This departure closed the first sustained European survey of Aotearoa and left behind new maps and reports that encouraged later visits by Europeans. For Māori, this moment is a clear endpoint to the pre-European era: iwi and hapū structures formed before 1769 would now develop under growing outside contact.
