East Polynesians begin settling Aotearoa
Labels: East PolynesiansArchaeological and environmental evidence indicates that people from East Polynesia reached Aotearoa/New Zealand in the late 1200s. Settlement required ocean navigation across long distances and then rapid adaptation to a cooler climate than most of Polynesia. This start point set the conditions for later waka traditions, regional communities, and ultimately iwi (tribal) formation.
