Lapita seafarers expand into Remote Oceania
Labels: Lapita culture, Remote OceaniaThe Lapita cultural complex (known especially from its dentate-stamped pottery) marks the start of large-scale, open-ocean settlement in the western Pacific. From about 1600 BCE, Lapita communities spread eastward through Island Melanesia into Fiji and onward toward western Polynesia. This expansion set the foundation for later Polynesian languages and voyaging traditions across a much larger ocean area.
