Radiocarbon work places the Lapita-associated occupation around the late 10th to early 8th century BCE. This provides one of the key anchors for when people were living in the Samoan archipelago in the early settlement era.
After the Lapita phase, pottery in Samoa shifted toward mostly undecorated ceramics often called Polynesian Plainware (PPW). This change suggests local communities were adapting technologies and styles over time rather than simply repeating earlier Lapita practices. PPW sites across the islands help show continued settlement and everyday village life after initial colonization.
Excavations at the To’aga site on Ofu (Manu‘a Islands, American Samoa) document an early and deeply layered record of settlement. Over time, these patterns support the emergence of larger and more organized communities tied together by kin groups and local leaders.
The Pulemelei mound on Savai‘i—often described as the largest ancient structure in the Samoan Islands—was likely constructed during the 12th to 15th centuries CE. Monumental building on this scale suggests coordinated labor and leadership, which fits with increasing social hierarchy in later pre-European Samoa. Such platforms are often interpreted as places for ceremonies and chiefly authority.
Across the islands, repeated construction and renovation of large stone features implies communities were organized enough to plan, feed, and direct large work groups. This supports a broader picture of chiefdom formation, where political power becomes more centralized in high-ranking lineages and councils. Monumental sites also helped make authority visible and durable across generations.
From roughly the 13th to 15th centuries, the Tuʻi Tonga polity is widely described as reaching a peak of expansion and influence in parts of West Polynesia. Samoa is often discussed in this context through traditions of inter-island voyaging, warfare, tribute, and elite marriages that linked chiefly families across Tonga and Samoa. These connections likely affected how Samoan leaders built alliances and competed for status.
By the late first to early second millennium CE, some communities were building substantial stone features in upland areas, including terracing and house foundations. Old Vatia (Tutuila) is an example of a ridgetop settlement dated broadly to the period 1300–1750 CE, showing organized construction and long-term occupation away from the coast. These inland sites help indicate growing populations and changing land use strategies.
Archaeological interpretation commonly places Pulemelei’s use extending for centuries after its initial construction. Continued activity suggests the site remained socially important through later phases of chiefly politics and ceremony. Long-lived centers like this are key evidence for durable, island-wide systems of leadership and community organization.
By about 1700 CE, Samoa had long-established village and district leadership traditions centered on titled chiefs (matai) and councils, with major lineages competing and cooperating across islands. This period marks a transition point: the settlement and monument-building record shows earlier growth and consolidation, while the next era would be shaped by sustained European contact and new political pressures. The pre-European foundations of chiefly authority remained central to Samoan society even as outside influences increased after 1700.
By the 18th century, Pulemelei is commonly described as no longer in active use, and some inland or upland settlements (such as Old Vatia on Tutuila) are also described as abandoned by around the mid-1700s. These changes suggest shifting settlement patterns and political geography near the end of the pre-European period.
