Initial settlement of Hawaiʻi by Polynesians
Labels: Polynesians, Hawai iSeafaring Polynesians established the first long-term human communities in the Hawaiian Islands, bringing crops, animals, and knowledge for living on isolated islands. Archaeological radiocarbon evidence suggests initial settlement occurred in the 1200s CE, later than older estimates that placed it closer to 900 CE. This settlement set the stage for population growth and the later rise of hereditary chiefs (aliʻi).
