In 1555, French colonists led by Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon established a base in Guanabara Bay, including Fort Coligny on what is now Villegagnon Island. Their alliance with local Indigenous groups challenged Portugal’s claim to the region and set up a direct rivalry over control of a strategic harbor.
In March 1560, Portuguese forces under Governor-General Mem de Sá attacked and destroyed Fort Coligny. Although this did not immediately remove the French from the area, it weakened their position and made later Portuguese occupation more likely.
In 1565, the Portuguese began building what became the Fortress of São João at the bay’s entrance. Its purpose was to protect the new settlement and control shipping routes into Guanabara Bay, a key requirement for Rio’s future role as a port city.
On March 1, 1565, Portuguese commander Estácio de Sá founded the settlement of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro near Sugarloaf Mountain. The town was created as a military base to secure Guanabara Bay and to drive out remaining French forces and their allies.
In 1567, Portugal organized the area as the Royal Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro, strengthening formal administration and defense. This shift mattered because it tied Rio’s survival to ongoing state support, helping it grow beyond a wartime camp into a lasting port town.
On January 20, 1567, Portuguese forces won a decisive battle that helped end French resistance around Guanabara Bay. Estácio de Sá was wounded in the fighting and died the next month, but the Portuguese victory cleared the way for Rio’s consolidation under Portuguese rule.
In March 1582, a large Iberian fleet arrived in Rio with widespread illness (including scurvy), and Jesuit-organized care efforts at Santa Luzia are commonly linked to the early development of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Rio. Over time, institutions like this supported port growth by caring for sailors, soldiers, and residents in a city shaped by Atlantic travel and disease risks.
Around 1609, a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Candelária was built, reflecting the city’s expanding religious and civic life. Churches and brotherhoods often acted as community anchors in colonial ports, organizing charity and creating networks among merchants and residents.
From November 1660 to April 1661, producers and local elites rebelled against taxes and controls linked to cachaça (sugarcane liquor). The revolt showed how a port economy—built on trade, taxation, and local production—could clash with royal policy, forcing negotiation and repression.
In 1676, Rio de Janeiro was made a Catholic bishopric (diocese), a sign of its rising status in the colony. A permanent church administration helped stabilize institutions in the city and reflected a larger, more settled population connected to the port.
Starting in the 1690s, gold discoveries in Minas Gerais drove a major rush of people, goods, and enslaved labor into the interior. Rio’s location made it a practical export port for mining wealth, increasing shipping, security needs, and the city’s political importance.
In 1694, colonial authorities created the Casa da Moeda do Brasil (Brazilian mint) to produce coinage tied to the growing precious-metals economy. The mint’s later move to Rio reflected how the city’s port increasingly sat at the center of wealth flows and imperial administration.
On September 19, 1710, French privateers under Jean-François Duclerc attempted to seize Rio de Janeiro but were defeated and captured. The attack highlighted Rio’s value as a port connected to imperial wealth—and showed that its defenses and leadership would remain a critical issue.
From September 12 to 22, 1711, a larger French force led by René Duguay-Trouin broke into Guanabara Bay and captured the city. Rio paid a ransom to reduce further destruction, an event that exposed vulnerabilities in port defenses and pushed authorities to rethink military preparations.
Construction of the Carioca Aqueduct began in 1718 to bring cleaner water from the Carioca River area to the city. Reliable water infrastructure mattered for a growing port population because it supported public health, daily life, and urban expansion beyond the earliest settlement core.
On January 27, 1763, Portugal transferred the main colonial administration in Brazil from Salvador to Rio de Janeiro. This decision confirmed Rio’s rise from a contested frontier harbor to the colony’s leading port and political center, closely tied to mining wealth and Atlantic trade.
