To channel and control the movement of people, supplies, and especially gold toward the coast, colonial administrators began formalizing the Estrada Real (Royal Road) network, making authorized routes central to taxation and anti-smuggling policy.
A royal charter in the late 1690s authorized opening a faster route linking Rio de Janeiro to the mining zone—an early step toward the Caminho Novo, which would strengthen Rio’s role in provisioning and exporting mining output.

In the war’s aftermath, the Portuguese Crown reorganized administration to strengthen oversight of the gold region, creating the royal Captaincy of São Paulo e Minas de Ouro—a key step in bringing the mining boom under closer metropolitan control.
The Crown elevated the mining settlement cluster to the status of vila as Vila Rica (later Ouro Preto), creating municipal institutions that anchored regional administration and helped channel mining wealth, labor, and trade through a formal urban center.
The settlement that became Vila do Carmo (later Mariana) was formally registered within colonial administration in the early 1710s, emerging as a major nearby center in the mining zone and later a key religious-administrative seat in Minas Gerais.
The Revolta de Vila Rica (also associated with Filipe dos Santos) protested tighter fiscal measures—especially foundry-house policies and restrictions on gold dust—showing mounting tension between local elites/commoners and royal enforcement in the gold economy.
Following the 1720 crisis, the Crown split the prior captaincy, creating the Captaincy of Minas Gerais to tighten direct control over the mining heartland; Vila Rica remained central as a political and economic hub of the gold regime.
The Crown elevated the town of Nossa Senhora do Ribeirão do Carmo to city status and renamed it Mariana, reflecting its rising prominence in Minas Gerais during the mid-18th-century peak of the gold economy.
Pope Benedict XIV created the Diocese of Mariana by the bull Candor lucis aeternae, making Mariana a major ecclesiastical center in the mining zone—an institutional shift that reinforced church-state presence alongside booming extraction and urban growth.
By the second half of the 18th century, Minas Gerais’ mineral production entered a sustained decline, driving stricter fiscal policy and reshaping Vila Rica/Ouro Preto’s trajectory from boomtown center toward a more constrained late-colonial economy.
