Portugal and Castile (Spain) signed the Treaty of Tordesillas to reduce conflict over newly encountered lands. It drew a north–south line in the Atlantic, with Portugal claiming rights to lands east of the line—an important legal framework later used to justify Portugal’s claim to part of South America.
Pedro Álvares Cabral’s fleet, sailing for Portugal, sighted land on the coast of what is now Brazil. Cabral claimed the territory for the Portuguese Crown and initially used names tied to the Christian calendar and symbols. This moment became the starting point for sustained Portuguese attention to the Brazilian coastline.
A large public Mass was held on the beach at Coroa Vermelha (near today’s Santa Cruz Cabrália) by Friar Henrique de Coimbra. The service was described in eyewitness reporting from the voyage and became a symbolic act of possession and religious intent. It also reflects early, still-uncertain interactions between Portuguese newcomers and Indigenous communities.
Pero Vaz de Caminha, a royal secretary traveling with Cabral, wrote a detailed letter to King Manuel I describing the new land, the coastline, and early encounters with Indigenous peoples. The letter is a foundational primary source for the first Portuguese descriptions of Brazil. It shows that Portugal quickly treated the coastline as a place for observation, naming, and future exploitation.
King Manuel I sent a follow-up expedition under Gonçalo Coelho to explore the Brazilian coast after Cabral’s report. With experienced navigators aboard, the voyage helped confirm that the land was a large coastline rather than a small island. This kind of reconnaissance—mapping harbors, currents, and trading possibilities—was essential before any major settlement attempt.
Coelho’s expedition reached Guanabara Bay on January 1 and, mistaking it for a river mouth, named it “Rio de Janeiro” (“January River”). The naming reflects a pattern of coastal navigation where landmarks were recorded by date and appearance. These place names later shaped colonial geography and administration.
A Portuguese world map known as the Cantino planisphere, produced in 1502, included new information about the Brazilian coastline. The map’s rapid spread beyond Portugal shows how valuable navigational knowledge had become for trade and power. Mapping also signaled that Portugal was treating the Brazilian coast as part of an organized maritime system.
After early reconnaissance showed the value of brazilwood (a dyewood), the Portuguese Crown began granting monopoly-style contracts that let private merchants finance extraction and shipping. A consortium led by Fernão de Loronha is widely cited as holding the first such contract. This shift helped Portugal profit from the coast without committing to costly large-scale colonization at first.
A later voyage associated with Gonçalo Coelho aimed to support the brazilwood trade by setting up feitorias (coastal warehouses/trading stations). These sites acted as collection points and anchors for ship traffic, helping Portugal maintain an economic footprint without fully settled towns. The approach relied heavily on alliances and exchange with local Indigenous groups, while also increasing conflict risks with rival Europeans.
As French ships increasingly traded for brazilwood and challenged Portuguese claims, Portugal began sending armed patrols to the Brazilian coast. Captain Cristóvão Jacques was tasked with these missions, signaling a move from exploration and trade toward maritime enforcement. The goal was to defend coastal access points and disrupt unauthorized foreign commerce.
During his patrols, Cristóvão Jacques established a Portuguese outpost/trading base at Itamaracá (near Pernambuco), an area with valuable brazilwood and a strong shipping position. This kind of fortified trading site aimed to secure supply, maintain contacts, and deter foreign intruders. It also shows Portugal’s growing realization that guarding the coast required fixed points, not only passing fleets.
Cristóvão Jacques returned under expanded authority and fought a series of engagements with French privateers. Accounts describe major captures in 1527 in the Recôncavo area of Bahia, reflecting how competition for brazilwood and coastal access had become militarized. These clashes helped convince Portuguese leaders that patrols alone were not enough to secure long-term control.
In 1530, Portugal sent Martim Afonso de Sousa with the explicit goal of starting durable colonization, not just exploration and trade. His expedition targeted foreign competition and began building permanent Portuguese settlements and institutions. This marked a turning point: the “initial coastal expeditions” phase gave way to structured colonization along the Brazilian coast.
