The Portuguese Crown created the Captaincy of Pernambuco as a privately financed settlement project and granted it to Duarte Coelho Pereira. The new captaincy was designed to attract settlers and investment, turning land into export production. This administrative step set the stage for Pernambuco’s sugar plantation economy.
Olinda was founded in 1535 and became a key administrative and social center tied to sugar wealth. Its location near the coast connected inland plantations to Atlantic shipping. Over time, the prosperity from sugar shaped the region’s built environment and political influence.
Duarte Coelho traveled to Brazil to govern Pernambuco directly rather than from Portugal. He brought settlers and people with sugar-growing and sugar-making experience from Atlantic islands such as Madeira and São Tomé. This helped Pernambuco begin building a plantation-based export economy early in colonial Brazil.
Recife began as a small port area serving nearby Olinda, growing from warehouses and shelters for sailors near a protected harbor. A 1537 royal charter referencing the port helped fix its early place in colonial administration and trade. As sugar exports expanded, Recife’s harbor became increasingly important for shipping.
By the mid-1500s, Pernambuco’s humid, fertile soils supported large-scale sugarcane cultivation, and new cane varieties were introduced to strengthen yields. Sugar mills (engenhos) combined fields, processing equipment, labor forces, and shipping links into one system. This deepened Pernambuco’s role as a major sugar-producing region in the Portuguese Atlantic.
The Dutch West India Company (WIC) was chartered with a monopoly over Dutch Atlantic trade and warfare. Sugar and the shipping routes that supported it were central targets, because plantation exports generated large profits. This organization later led the Dutch move into Pernambuco to seize the heart of Brazil’s sugar economy.
In early 1630, a Dutch WIC force captured Olinda and then Recife, establishing a foothold in Pernambuco. The invasion aimed at controlling the most valuable sugar-producing zone and its ports. This takeover began a long struggle that tied plantation production directly to military occupation and fortification.
After occupying the region, Dutch forces destroyed Olinda and concentrated their defenses and administration in Recife. Recife’s protected harbor and fortifications made it easier to hold and supply than Olinda’s hilltop site. The shift strengthened Recife’s position as the key colonial port for the sugar zone.
John Maurice of Nassau was appointed governor-general of Dutch Brazil and arrived at Recife as Dutch control expanded. He sought to stabilize the colony’s economy by working with Portuguese plantation owners while also strengthening Dutch administration. Under his rule, Recife became the political and commercial hub of “New Holland” (Dutch Brazil).
In 1640, Portugal broke from Spanish rule, changing political loyalties across the empire. In Dutch-held Pernambuco, this helped fuel Portuguese and local resistance by sharpening conflicts over sovereignty, religion, and control of plantation wealth. Tensions between Dutch authorities and planters grew as the struggle for control continued.
During Nassau’s administration, the Dutch built bridges, canals, and planned neighborhoods around Recife, often called Mauritsstad. These public works supported trade, movement of goods, and defense in a plantation-export colony. The rebuilt port city became closely tied to sugar revenues and the wider Dutch Atlantic system.
In 1645, leaders in Pernambuco organized a rebellion against Dutch control, drawing support from plantation owners and allied forces. The conflict is often described as the Insurrection of Pernambuco (1645–1654). It turned a contested occupation into an extended war that disrupted sugar production and governance.
In April 1648, rebel forces defeated a larger Dutch army at Guararapes, near Recife. The battle showed that local forces could win in the region’s terrain and climate, helping the rebellion continue. It became a major turning point in the campaign to end Dutch rule in Pernambuco.
In February 1649, the second battle at Guararapes ended in another defeat for the Dutch. The loss reduced Dutch confidence and limited their ability to control the countryside that fed Recife’s port and sugar trade. Even though the Dutch remained in Recife for several more years, the balance had shifted.
After a long campaign and sieges, Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian forces retook Recife in 1654. This ended the Dutch political project in northeastern Brazil and restored Portuguese control of the region’s sugar economy. Recife remained the key port connecting Pernambuco’s plantations to Atlantic markets.
In 1661, the Dutch Republic formally recognized Portuguese sovereignty over Dutch Brazil (New Holland) in exchange for an indemnity payment. The treaty closed the main international dispute over Pernambuco and Recife after years of war. It marked an end state in which the sugar plantation system continued under Portuguese rule, with Recife as the region’s central port city.
