A small exile force led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja crossed from Buenos Aires and landed on the Banda Oriental (today Uruguay). Their landing helped restart an organized rebellion against Brazil’s Cisplatine Province. It also signaled that the struggle would likely draw in the neighboring United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (Argentina).
Delegates meeting at Florida declared Cisplatina’s independence from the Empire of Brazil and approved political steps to align the province with the United Provinces. These declarations turned a regional revolt into an international dispute. Brazil now faced the prospect of losing the province and confronting Argentina directly.
Rebel cavalry under Fructuoso Rivera won an early victory against Brazilian-loyal forces at Rincón. The win helped the insurgents capture supplies and reinforce control over rural areas. It also increased pressure on Brazil’s garrisons outside the main coastal cities.
Lavalleja’s forces defeated Brazilian troops near Sarandí, a decisive rebel victory in the countryside. After Sarandí, Brazil’s effective control contracted toward fortified coastal centers such as Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento. The result encouraged stronger Argentine support for the uprising.
After Cisplatina’s leaders declared separation from Brazil and sought union with the United Provinces, Brazil formally declared war. This made the conflict a state-to-state war rather than only a local rebellion. Naval operations quickly became central because trade through the Río de la Plata was economically vital.
Brazil declared a blockade intended to cut off Buenos Aires and weaken the United Provinces’ economy and war effort. The blockade raised tensions with neutral shipping and made sea power a major factor in the war’s outcome. It also pushed the United Provinces to rely on smaller forces, including privateers, to challenge Brazil at sea.
The opposing fleets fought at Punta Colares in the Río de la Plata in the first major naval engagement of the war. The battle was inconclusive, but it showed that Argentina would contest Brazil’s maritime pressure rather than accept the blockade. Sea fighting would continue alongside a land stalemate.
A much larger Brazilian fleet tried to crush the smaller Argentine force near Buenos Aires. The action ended without a decisive result, but it reinforced the idea that control of the estuary could not be settled quickly. The ongoing naval contest kept commerce and diplomacy under strain.
Brazil defeated the Argentine fleet near Quilmes, damaging Argentina’s ability to challenge the blockade with major warships. Although Argentina continued to fight at sea with smaller craft, Brazil’s stronger navy increasingly shaped the conflict. This helped balance Argentina’s advantages on land in the interior.
Admiral William Brown’s forces won a major naval victory on the Uruguay River, capturing or destroying many Brazilian vessels. The win disrupted Brazilian operations aimed at controlling river communications. Even so, Brazil’s overall naval strength remained significant, keeping the broader maritime balance contested.
The war’s largest land battle was fought near the Santa Maria River, with forces of the United Provinces (including many Orientals) defeating the Brazilian army. The battle did not end the war because Brazil still held key fortified cities and supply lines remained difficult for the invaders. It did, however, reinforce that neither side could win quickly and decisively on land.
Brazil defeated Argentine naval forces near the Ensenada coast, a serious loss for Argentina’s best ships. This result strengthened Brazil’s ability to sustain pressure on trade and keep coastal strongholds supplied. With neither side able to force a clear victory overall, the war moved closer to a negotiated settlement.
Brazil and the United Provinces signed a British-mediated agreement in Rio de Janeiro ending the war and recognizing an independent Uruguay. The settlement created a buffer state between the two larger powers and reduced pressure on trade in the Río de la Plata region. The Cisplatine War thus concluded with Uruguay emerging as a new sovereign country rather than being absorbed by either neighbor.
