Around the early 1830s, liberal politicians coalesced into what became known as the Liberal Party (Partido Liberal), associated with greater provincial autonomy and reformist tendencies within the imperial constitutional framework.
Emperor Pedro I abdicated in favor of his son, Pedro II, triggering the politically turbulent Regency (1831–1840). The period’s instability helped crystallize rival political groupings that later formalized as Liberal and Conservative parties.
The Additional Act amended the 1824 Constitution to decentralize aspects of governance by creating provincial legislative assemblies and altering regency arrangements—an important liberal reform that later became a focus of conservative backlash and reinterpretation.

The Rio Branco Law (Lei do Ventre Livre) freed children born to enslaved women after the law’s enactment (with significant conditions), making slavery a central parliamentary issue that split party factions and accelerated abolitionist mobilization.
A confrontation involving Catholic bishops, Freemasonry, and imperial authority escalated into a national crisis, contributing to cabinet instability and sharpening ideological divisions that intersected with Liberal and Conservative rivalries.
Decree No. 3,029 reformed the electoral system by instituting voter registration and direct elections for elective offices, while excluding illiterates—changes that reshaped party competition and parliamentary legitimacy debates late in the Empire.
After intense parliamentary conflict over the liberal Dantas proposal, Law No. 3,270 (Saraiva-Cotegipe / Sexagenarians Law) granted freedom to enslaved people aged 60+ under restrictive conditions, illustrating the Empire’s escalating party crisis over abolition.
Law No. 3,353 (Lei Áurea) abolished slavery without compensation, signed by Princess Isabel while acting as regent. The measure intensified opposition among many slaveholding elites and became a key accelerant in the monarchy’s final political collapse.
A military-led coup proclaimed the Republic, ending the Empire of Brazil and terminating the imperial party system. The long-standing Liberal–Conservative alternation under the monarchy ceased as the old parties were dissolved in the new regime.
