U.S. recognizes Colombian federation (Gran Colombia)

On June 19, 1822, the United States recognized Colombia (the federation that included present-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama) when President James Monroe received Manuel Torres as chargé d’affaires. This early recognition created a diplomatic baseline that later had to be adjusted when the federation split.
