Pataliputra (near modern Patna) rose to prominence as the Mauryan Empire’s main political center. Its riverine location supported trade, transport, and food supply, helping a large city function reliably. This capital city set early South Asian precedents for fortified urban form and large public buildings.
Greek envoy Megasthenes (writing in Indica, known through later authors) described Pataliputra as strongly defended with a timber palisade, many towers, and multiple gates. This account highlights early emphasis on controlled entry points and continuous perimeter defenses. Such descriptions also shaped later historical understanding of Mauryan-scale urban infrastructure.
Agra’s urban importance sharply increased when Sikandar Lodi rebuilt the city and made it a seat of government in the early 1500s. Sources describe a deliberate selection of the site along the Yamuna, tying political power to river access. This step helped set up Agra as a later Mughal-capital city with strong riverfront logic.
In 1526, Babur established Aram Bagh (also known as Ram Bagh) in Agra, an early example of the Mughal preference for planned gardens integrated with waterways. The garden form reflects the broader Persian-inspired charbagh idea: a geometric layout organized by paths and water channels. This introduced a planning language that later shaped Mughal riverfront landscapes in Agra.
Akbar commissioned major reconstruction of Agra Fort beginning in 1565, creating a fortified administrative and residential complex on the Yamuna’s bank. The fort’s walls, moat, and controlled gateways made it both a defensive structure and a governing hub. This illustrates continuity with earlier Indian capitals: strong perimeters paired with planned internal spaces for rule and ceremony.
Akbar founded Fatehpur Sikri near Agra as a new imperial center with a carefully arranged court complex and associated urban areas. Its design reflects planned spatial hierarchy: the ruler’s precinct, ceremonial spaces, and zones for work and residence. Fatehpur Sikri shows how Mughal planning could create a city quickly around imperial needs.
By 1573, the rebuilt fort complex was largely complete, strengthening Agra’s role as an imperial center. With the fort as an anchor, the surrounding city grew through court demands: housing, markets, and service neighborhoods that supported governance. The fort-and-city relationship became a model repeated in later Mughal foundations.
Within a few decades, the Mughal court moved away and Fatehpur Sikri was largely abandoned, with water supply commonly cited as a key constraint alongside strategic priorities. The episode shows a planning lesson visible across eras: even well-designed monumental cities struggle without resilient water infrastructure and political commitment. The court’s mobility redirected resources back toward other nodes such as Agra and later Delhi.
By 1638–1639, Shah Jahan began shifting the Mughal capital from Agra toward Delhi, marking a major re-centering of imperial geography. This transition mattered for urban planning because it redirected craftsmen, administrators, and investment into a new planned capital. Agra’s forts, gardens, and riverfront development remained influential reference points even as the political center moved.
Shah Jahan commissioned the Red Fort in 1639, designed as a fortified palace complex linked to the new city of Shahjahanabad. Placed by the Yamuna, it combined defense (walls and moats) with planned ceremonial and residential spaces. Like earlier capitals, it shows the continuity of using a strong central precinct to organize the surrounding city.
By 1648, the fortified city of Shahjahanabad and its palace-fort complex were completed, creating a new planned imperial capital. The walled city format emphasized controlled gates, major axial routes, and dense market streets serving both residents and the court. This marked a later high point of Indo-Islamic urban form—fort, bazaar, and neighborhood fabric working together.
In 1650, Chandni Chowk was designed and established as a principal commercial street of Shahjahanabad, with a central water channel and an associated pool in its earlier form. The project shows continuity in linking streets, markets, and water management in a planned layout. It also demonstrates how Mughal urban planning integrated economic life directly into the capital’s core structure.
Excavations in the Patna area (including Bulandi Bagh) uncovered remains interpreted as parts of Pataliputra’s wooden palisade and related structures. Archaeological traces provide physical support for literary reports of strong city defenses. Together, texts and finds suggest a city planned around security, access control, and imperial administration.
Excavations at Kumrahar (near Patna) identified the layout of the so-called “Eighty Pillared Hall,” with pillar positions mapped in a regular grid. The hall’s planned spacing and large scale point to organized construction and formal public or administrative space. This kind of monumental, ordered building supports the idea of Mauryan-era urban planning beyond simple housing and streets.
