The last Mauryan emperor, Brihadratha, was assassinated by his commander Pushyamitra during a military parade. Pushyamitra then founded the Shunga dynasty, ending Mauryan imperial rule in the core region around Pataliputra. This overthrow marks a clear closing outcome: the Mauryan model of centralized empire gave way to new dynasties and more fragmented political control.
After Ashoka’s death, the empire began to shrink as regions and local powers asserted themselves and succession disputes increased. The Mauryan system depended on strong central oversight; when that weakened, the cost of maintaining unity rose. This decline set the conditions for an elite takeover at the capital.
Late in Ashoka’s reign, major pillar edicts were inscribed on tall stone columns placed in key locations. These texts give more detailed guidance on administration and moral policy, and they highlight the empire’s ability to quarry, transport, and erect massive standardized monuments. The pillars reinforced a single imperial voice across distant provinces.
Ashoka’s rock edicts were carved across the empire on cliffs and boulders, using accessible public spaces to reach travelers and local communities. They link governance with dhamma (moral conduct), urging restraint, welfare measures, and fair dealing. These inscriptions are among the most important direct records of Mauryan state messaging and priorities.
Ashokan inscriptions at the Barabar Caves record royal dedication of carefully cut rock shelters to the Ajivikas, a religious community active alongside Buddhists and Jains. The dated dedicatory texts show how the Mauryan state used grants and public inscriptions to manage relations with different groups. This is another form of “imperial administration in practice,” linking resources, ideology, and visible state presence.
One of Ashoka’s earliest known edicts was carved near Kandahar in Greek and Aramaic. Its location and languages show that Mauryan communication strategies were designed for frontier populations and long-distance audiences. This illustrates “administration in practice”: policy was broadcast publicly, not only enforced privately through officials.
Ashoka’s conquest of Kalinga was a major military turning point, described in later summaries and echoed in the themes of his inscriptions. Accounts emphasize that the war caused severe loss of life and displacement. Kalinga’s annexation was the last major territorial addition of the Mauryan Empire.
After Bindusara’s death, sources describe a contested succession that ended with Ashoka taking the throne. This transfer mattered because it brought to power the Mauryan ruler whose inscriptions are the most direct evidence for how imperial policy was communicated. Ashoka inherited both the machinery of centralized rule and the challenges of governing a diverse empire.
Bindusara followed Chandragupta and kept the empire intact while continuing expansion and consolidation. Ancient traditions and later historical reconstructions link his reign with holding a very large realm together across long distances. His rule set the stage for Ashoka to inherit an empire with strong administrative habits and wide territorial reach.
With borders more secure, the Mauryan court relied heavily on organized administration: revenue collection, justice, and oversight of officials. Later texts attributed to the Arthashastra tradition emphasize state information systems, including trained agents and counter-spies, as tools to test officials and manage threats. Even though the surviving Arthashastra text is probably later in its final form, it preserves ideas closely associated with “Mauryan-style” governance.
Seleucus I Nicator attempted to advance into the northwest, leading to the Seleucid–Mauryan conflict. The confrontation ended in a treaty: Greek sources describe Seleucus ceding territories in exchange for an alliance and receiving war elephants (often given as 500). The settlement reduced pressure on the frontier and strengthened Mauryan international standing.
Chandragupta Maurya overthrew the Nanda rulers in Magadha and built a new imperial center at Pataliputra (near modern Patna). This created the first durable empire to unify most of the Indian subcontinent under one administration. The Mauryan state became known for centralized authority supported by a standing army and a growing civil service.
After Alexander the Great’s death (323 BCE), power in the northwest was contested by successors and local forces. Chandragupta moved into the Punjab and consolidated Mauryan control in this strategically important border region. This helped stabilize the empire’s western frontier and tied trade and military routes more closely to Pataliputra.
