The Achaemenid Empire expanded into the northwest of the subcontinent (including Gandhara), bringing imperial habits of written administration. Across the Achaemenid realm, Aramaic served as a major language for official communication and record-keeping, creating a background for later cross-cultural script and language use in the region.
Around 260 BCE, Ashoka had an edict carved near Kandahar in Greek and Aramaic, aimed at audiences used to those languages. This shows an early imperial strategy: communicating policy across diverse populations by choosing languages and scripts people could read.
After the earliest foreign-language edicts, Ashoka’s broader program used Prakrit written in Brahmi on rocks and pillars across much of the empire. These inscriptions helped make Brahmi a widely recognized script of state communication in many regions.
In the northwest, Ashokan edicts were carved in Kharosthi, written right-to-left and associated with Gandhara. This shows how imperial messaging adapted to a regional scribal culture shaped by earlier Aramaic-writing practices.
From roughly 200 BCE into the early centuries CE, many inscriptions in the northwest continued to be written in Kharosthi, while Brahmi dominated much of the rest of the subcontinent. The result was a long-running regional divide in scripts used for public and administrative writing.
Under the Kushans, official writing drew on multiple traditions: Bactrian written in Greek script, and also Prakrit written in Brahmi or Kharosthi in different areas. This multilingual, multiscript practice reflects how empires used whatever scribal tools worked across wide territories.
In the Gupta period, a refined Gupta script developed out of Brahmi and spread with Gupta power. Over time, this script became a key ancestor for many later North Indian writing systems, linking earlier Brahmi-based epigraphy to medieval scripts.
The Prayag Prashasti (Allahabad Pillar inscription) praises Samudragupta in polished Sanskrit and is written in a later Brahmi form associated with the Gupta script. It helped set a model for elite political writing: Sanskrit as a prestige administrative and commemorative language, expressed through evolving Brahmi-derived scripts.
In southern India, Brahmi-derived writing continued along a distinct path, with the Pallava script attested from about the 4th century CE. It was used to write both Tamil and Sanskrit in court and religious contexts, supporting durable record and inscription traditions outside the northern Gupta lineage.
By the early medieval period, royal grants on copper plates often used two languages—typically Sanskrit for formal praise and legitimation, and a regional language for practical details. For example, the Velvikudi plates are bilingual (Tamil and Sanskrit), showing how administration blended prestige language with local documentary needs.
From the 13th–14th centuries, the Delhi Sultanate fostered a Persianate political culture in which high-level writing and historical narration were commonly done in Persian. Barani’s Tārīkh-i Fīrūzshāhī, completed in 1357, illustrates the maturity of Persian historical and administrative literacies in North India.
Under the Mughals, Persian became the dominant language for many official records and reporting practices at the imperial level. Abu’l Fazl’s Ain-i-Akbari (written 1589–1596 in Persian) organized detailed information on governance, helping standardize how the state described its institutions, revenues, and provinces.
In the early 17th century, a Persian inscription associated with Jahangir was carved onto the Allahabad Pillar, physically overlaying older layers of writing. The pillar thus became a visible record of transition: from Mauryan Brahmi inscriptions to Gupta Sanskrit epigraphy, and then to Persianate imperial self-representation under the Mughals.
