New Delhi hosted the Asian Relations Conference, bringing together Asian governments and independence movements. The meeting aimed to build ties among newly decolonizing societies and showed India’s early push for a broader, non-bloc approach to world affairs. It helped establish India’s role as a convening power in Asia before formal non-aligned institutions existed.
India became independent from British rule, and leaders faced immediate pressure to choose sides in the emerging U.S.–Soviet rivalry. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru emphasized freedom of action in foreign policy—cooperating widely, but avoiding alliances that could limit India’s decisions. This set the core idea that later became known as non-alignment.
India and China signed the 1954 Sino-Indian Agreement, whose preamble listed the Panchsheel (five principles) of peaceful coexistence. These ideas—such as mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference—became widely associated with India’s non-aligned approach. The agreement also shows how India tried to manage major-power relations through rules rather than military blocs.
At the Bandung Conference in Indonesia, Asian and African states discussed decolonization, development, and the risks of being drawn into Cold War rivalry. India was a major participant, using the forum to promote cooperation among newly independent countries. Bandung became a key stepping stone toward a more organized non-aligned movement.
The UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 1514 (XV), the “Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.” For India and other postcolonial states, the UN became a major arena to push anti-colonial norms and resist great-power domination. This reinforced non-alignment as both a security stance and a moral argument about self-determination.
Leaders met in Belgrade for the first summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). India was among the initiators, and the summit promoted peace, disarmament, and opposition to colonialism while avoiding formal alignment with either Cold War bloc. NAM created a durable platform for India to coordinate with other developing countries on global issues.
China and India fought a short but decisive border war, ending with a Chinese ceasefire after major Indian reverses. The conflict exposed the practical limits of idealistic “peaceful coexistence” language and forced India to focus more on defense and security partnerships. It also complicated India’s ability to act as a neutral bridge between major powers.
After the 1965 India–Pakistan war, India and Pakistan signed the Tashkent Declaration, brokered by the Soviet Union. The agreement aimed to restore relations and reduce the risk of renewed fighting. For India, the episode showed how non-alignment could still involve accepting major-power mediation when regional wars threatened escalation.
India and the Soviet Union signed the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation, committing to broad strategic cooperation. While India continued to use the language of non-alignment, the treaty reflected a clear security-driven tilt toward Moscow amid U.S. and China ties with Pakistan. It shaped India’s diplomatic room to maneuver during the 1971 crisis.
War broke out between India and Pakistan, ending with the surrender of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh. The conflict was a major turning point: India’s actions were driven by regional security and a humanitarian refugee crisis, but were also shaped by Cold War alignments. The outcome increased India’s regional influence while deepening great-power scrutiny of its non-aligned claims.
India and Pakistan signed the Simla Agreement to normalize relations after the 1971 war. It converted the prior ceasefire line in Kashmir into the Line of Control and emphasized settling disputes through bilateral negotiations. This fit India’s preference for limiting outside intervention—an approach consistent with non-alignment’s emphasis on sovereignty.
India conducted its first nuclear test at Pokhran, calling it a “peaceful nuclear explosion.” The test signaled that India’s non-alignment included refusing permanent dependence on outside security guarantees. It also changed how other countries assessed India’s role in regional security and global nonproliferation debates.
At the Havana NAM summit, member states split over whether the movement should lean toward the Soviet bloc or keep greater distance from both superpowers. India was among the countries resisting a formal tilt, arguing that NAM’s credibility depended on independence from bloc politics. The summit highlighted how hard it was to maintain unity while superpower rivalry intensified.
India hosted the 7th NAM summit in New Delhi, with Indira Gandhi chairing the meeting. The summit was meant to restore NAM’s balance after the Havana disputes and to address rising global tensions of the early 1980s. Hosting reinforced India’s leadership claim within NAM even as its security ties with the USSR remained significant.
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi addressed the UN General Assembly’s special session on disarmament and presented an “Action Plan” for a nuclear-weapon-free world. The initiative linked non-alignment to global rule-making—arguing that security should come from universal disarmament rather than alliances and deterrence. It also showed India trying to lead on moral and practical security issues despite being outside the nuclear nonproliferation treaty framework.
By 1991, the Cold War order was collapsing and India faced a severe balance-of-payments crisis that pushed economic reform and foreign-policy adaptation. India renewed the 1971 Indo-Soviet treaty in August 1991, but the Soviet Union dissolved later that year, removing India’s main strategic partner within the old bipolar system. The 1947–1991 non-alignment era thus closed with India entering a more fluid, post–Cold War environment that required new approaches.
