India created the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in August 1969, replacing the earlier INCOSPAR program. This step centralized planning for satellites, launch vehicles, and space-based applications aimed at national development. It marked the formal start of ISRO as the country’s main civilian space agency.
In June 1972, the Government of India created the Space Commission and the Department of Space (DOS). ISRO was placed under DOS in September 1972, giving the program a stable government structure for long-term funding and decision-making. This reorganization helped scale ISRO from experiments to operational systems.
Aryabhata, India’s first satellite designed and built domestically, was launched on April 19, 1975, by a Soviet Kosmos-3M rocket. The mission helped India learn how to build, test, and operate a spacecraft in orbit. It set the technical foundation for later Indian satellites and ground control systems.
On July 18, 1980, ISRO’s SLV-3 rocket successfully launched the Rohini (RS-1) satellite, making India one of the few countries able to place a satellite into orbit using its own launch vehicle. This proved key technologies like staging, guidance, and solid-fuel rocketry. It also demonstrated that India could build an end-to-end space capability, not just satellites.
ISRO notes that the INSAT communication satellite system was established in 1983 with the commissioning of INSAT-1B. INSAT satellites supported national needs such as telecommunications, TV broadcasting, weather services, and disaster warnings. This expanded the space program’s day-to-day impact beyond research into public services.
After a failed first flight in 1993, PSLV succeeded on October 15, 1994, placing the IRS-P2 Earth-observation satellite into orbit. PSLV became a workhorse launcher, supporting frequent launches for remote sensing, science, and later deep-space missions. Reliable access to orbit strengthened India’s ability to run large satellite constellations over time.
On September 20, 2004, ISRO flew the first operational mission of its Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), launching EDUSAT (GSAT-3). GSLV was designed to place heavier satellites into geosynchronous transfer orbit, which is important for communications and meteorology. This milestone helped reduce dependence on foreign launch services for certain high-value satellites.
Chandrayaan-1 launched on October 22, 2008, becoming India’s first mission to the Moon. It carried Indian and international instruments to map the lunar surface and study its composition. The mission helped establish India as a capable deep-space operator using its PSLV rocket and national tracking network.
IRNSS-1A, the first satellite in India’s regional navigation system (later called NavIC), launched on July 1, 2013. Navigation satellites provide precise positioning and timing signals, supporting transport, emergency response, and other critical services. Starting the constellation signaled a shift toward space systems that directly support national infrastructure.
ISRO launched the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called Mangalyaan, on November 5, 2013. It was India’s first spacecraft sent to another planet, aimed at both technology demonstration and scientific observations. The mission expanded ISRO’s capabilities in deep-space navigation, long-duration operations, and interplanetary communications.
On December 18, 2014, ISRO flew the first experimental mission of GSLV Mk III (also called LVM3-X/CARE). The flight tested key parts of the heavy-lift rocket during atmospheric flight and demonstrated a crew module atmospheric re-entry experiment (CARE). This supported later goals for heavier payloads and future human spaceflight technologies.
Chandrayaan-2 launched on July 22, 2019, aiming to orbit the Moon and attempt a soft landing near the south polar region. On September 6, 2019, the Vikram lander lost communication during its final descent, and ISRO later indicated it experienced a hard landing. Even with the landing failure, the mission’s orbiter continued as a major lunar science platform.
Chandrayaan-3 launched on July 14, 2023, and successfully soft-landed on August 23, 2023. The landing demonstrated improved guidance, navigation, and landing systems after the Chandrayaan-2 attempt. This milestone made India the first country to land successfully near the Moon’s south polar region, strengthening ISRO’s position in lunar exploration.
ISRO launched Aditya-L1 on September 2, 2023, to study the Sun from the Sun–Earth L1 region, about 1.5 million km from Earth. On January 6, 2024, ISRO reported successful insertion into its planned halo orbit (a looping 3D orbit around L1) for long-term solar observations. This expanded India’s space science beyond planets and the Moon to continuous solar monitoring.
On November 2, 2025, ISRO’s LVM3 carried the CMS-03 communications satellite to geosynchronous transfer orbit in the rocket’s fifth operational flight. ISRO described CMS-03 (about 4,400 kg) as the heaviest communications satellite launched to GTO from Indian soil, showing growth in both satellite mass and launch capability. As of 2025, this milestone highlights a mature program able to deliver large, practical space infrastructure alongside science missions.
