In August 1947, British India was divided into the new dominions of India and Pakistan. Princely states like Jammu and Kashmir had to choose whether to join India or Pakistan, or attempt to remain independent. The uncertainty around Kashmir’s decision created the conditions for conflict soon after independence.
On 22 October 1947, armed tribal forces from Pakistan’s side entered Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to seize territory and force a decision on accession. The invasion quickly threatened key towns on the route to Srinagar. This crisis pushed the Maharaja’s government to seek urgent military help from India.
Maharaja Hari Singh executed the Instrument of Accession on 26 October 1947, agreeing that Jammu and Kashmir would accede to India under the legal framework used by other princely states. India’s Governor-General accepted the accession on 27 October 1947. The accession gave India a formal basis to deploy forces to defend the state, while Pakistan disputed the legitimacy and timing.
Indian forces were flown into Srinagar as the fighting approached the Kashmir Valley’s main airfield and administrative center. Rapid airlift was crucial because road access was slow and vulnerable. The airlift helped prevent a quick capture of Srinagar and set the stage for a longer war.
On 3 November 1947, Indian troops fought a defensive action at Badgam near Srinagar’s airport against a much larger raiding force. The engagement helped protect the airfield, which was vital for bringing in reinforcements and supplies. The battle became an early turning point in preventing a collapse of defenses in the Valley.
On 7 November 1947, Indian forces defeated raiders near Shalateng, stopping the push toward Srinagar and beginning a counteroffensive. The battle disrupted the attackers’ momentum and reduced the immediate threat to the capital area. After this, front lines began to stabilize into more organized military positions.
As pressure increased in the Jammu region, Poonch was reinforced on 22 November 1947 by troops that would later defend the town under siege. Holding Poonch mattered because it tied down opposing forces and protected routes and populations in the southwest of the state. The fighting there became part of a wider pattern of sieges and relief efforts across the war zone.
On 20 January 1948, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 39, creating a commission to investigate and mediate the India–Pakistan dispute over Jammu and Kashmir. This move internationalized the conflict and opened a parallel diplomatic track to the battlefield. The commission later evolved into the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP).
On 21 April 1948, the Security Council adopted Resolution 47, expanding the UN commission and recommending steps toward peace. The plan centered on a ceasefire, Pakistani withdrawal of forces and fighters, Indian force reductions to minimum levels for law and order, and a future plebiscite. Both governments objected to parts of the plan but accepted UN mediation as fighting continued.
From 1 to 24 November 1948, Indian forces carried out Operation Bison to recapture the Zoji La pass and push toward Dras and Kargil. Taking the pass mattered because it helped reopen the route between Kashmir and Ladakh and reduced the risk of Ladakh being cut off. The operation showed how high-altitude geography strongly shaped what each side could hold and supply.
After months of fighting and UN negotiations, a ceasefire came into effect on 1 January 1949. The ceasefire stopped large-scale combat but did not settle the political dispute. It effectively froze positions on the ground, leaving Jammu and Kashmir divided between areas held by India and Pakistan.
On 27 July 1949, India and Pakistan’s military representatives, under UNCIP supervision, signed the Karachi Agreement to define a Cease-Fire Line in Jammu and Kashmir. This line created a more exact, mapped separation between forces and enabled UN monitoring arrangements. The agreement marked a concrete end-state of the first war: a ceasefire boundary that shaped later borders and future conflicts.
