In 1611, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) obtained permission to trade in Jayakarta and set up warehouses that were later fortified. This foothold put the VOC in direct competition with other trading powers and local rulers around the port. It set the stage for the VOC to seek stronger control over the harbor and nearby territory.
From 17–30 May 1619, VOC forces under Jan Pieterszoon Coen defeated Jayakarta’s defenders and burned much of the settlement. The VOC then began building a new Dutch city on the ruins, which became Batavia (in today’s Jakarta). This marked the start of Batavia as the VOC’s main base in western Java.
After taking Jayakarta, the VOC developed its fortifications at the river mouth into Batavia Castle starting around 1620. The castle became the administrative center for the VOC in Asia and the residence of the Governor-General. Its presence reinforced Batavia’s role as a fortified hub for trade and government.
On 18 January 1621, the settlement’s official name—Batavia—was chosen and marked with a naming ceremony. The name reflected Dutch ideas about ancestry (the Batavi) and signaled a long-term colonial project, not just a temporary trading post. This helped define Batavia as the planned center of VOC authority in the region.
Between 22 August 1628 and September 1629, Sultan Agung of Mataram attempted to capture Batavia in two major siege efforts. The VOC held the city, but the campaigns showed that Batavia’s survival depended on strong fortifications, supply systems, and alliances. The failed sieges helped confirm Batavia’s position as a durable VOC stronghold on Java.
On 23 October 1695, the church later known as Gereja Sion (originally the Portuguese Buitenkerk) opened outside Batavia’s city walls. It served Portuguese-speaking Christians and reflects the city’s diverse population, including people connected to earlier Portuguese networks and slavery in the region. The building remains an important marker of Batavia’s multi-ethnic colonial society.
In 1710, Batavia’s Stadhuis (city hall) was completed, giving the city a prominent civic center near the main square. The building supported day-to-day colonial administration and local governance in the growing port city. It also reflected Batavia’s shift from a fortified outpost into a more complex urban capital.
In the 1730s, malaria outbreaks in and around Batavia contributed to severe public health pressures and deaths, including among top colonial officials. During the same decade, tighter control measures and deportation policies aimed at Chinese residents increased fear and resentment. These overlapping pressures helped create the conditions for major unrest in 1740.
From 9 October to 22 November 1740, violence in Batavia led to the mass killing of ethnic Chinese residents. The event followed growing tensions tied to labor conditions, economic change, and VOC security policies. Its aftermath reshaped Batavia’s social geography, including tighter controls over Chinese communities.
On 24 April 1778, scholars and officials in Batavia founded the Bataviaasch Genootschap (later the Royal Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences). The society promoted research and collecting in fields like history, language, and natural science. It became a lasting institution that influenced how the VOC and later colonial governments studied and managed the region.
On 31 December 1799, the VOC was dissolved after long-term financial and administrative problems. Its territories and obligations were taken over by the Dutch state, ending the era when a private company governed from Batavia. This was a major turning point: Batavia remained a capital, but under a new political framework.
In 1809, Governor-General Herman Willem Daendels ordered Batavia Castle demolished. The demolition reflected changing military needs and urban priorities, and it also signaled a move away from the old VOC-era coastal fortress complex. This helped accelerate the shift of administrative focus away from the older, canal-based city core.
From 4 August to 18 September 1811, British forces invaded Java and defeated the Franco-Dutch administration. The campaign led to a formal transfer of control and began a British occupation of Java. For Batavia, this marked a clear end point to the city’s growth story under VOC foundations and later Dutch rule up to 1811.
