After Pakubuwono II died, a contested succession and Dutch East India Company (VOC) involvement helped trigger a wider civil conflict in central Java. Rival elites and armed followers competed for legitimacy, land rights, and influence. This conflict set the stage for a negotiated partition of Mataram rather than a single restored kingdom.
The Treaty of Giyanti formally divided Mataram into two courts: Surakarta under Pakubuwono III and a new western realm under Prince Mangkubumi. The agreement helped end major fighting by turning a succession war into a structured political split. It also increased Dutch leverage by dealing with multiple smaller courts instead of one large power.
Following the partition, Mangkubumi took the regnal name Sultan Hamengkubuwono I and established the Yogyakarta Sultanate as a new center of authority. This shift mattered because it created a second major court in central Java with its own administration, army, and court culture. The new sultanate became a key actor in later negotiations and conflicts involving the Dutch.
A further settlement ended remaining major resistance by granting Raden Mas Said a recognized principality within the Surakarta sphere. He received the title Mangkunegara I, and the Mangkunegaran became a third important Javanese polity. The creation of this new state further fragmented the old Mataram realm and reshaped alliances for decades.
The Dutch East India Company (VOC) was formally dissolved, and its debts and possessions were taken over by the Dutch state. This mattered in Java because governance shifted from a trading company’s system to a more direct colonial administration. The princely courts continued to exist, but they now faced a stronger and more centralized colonial government.
Daendels ordered construction of the Great Post Road across Java to speed troop movement and strengthen colonial defense. The project relied heavily on unpaid forced labor and caused large-scale suffering and deaths. It became an early 19th-century symbol of how colonial modernization could be tied to coercion.
Under Napoleonic-era pressures, Herman Willem Daendels was appointed governor-general and pushed reforms to strengthen defenses and tighten control in Java. His policies aimed to reduce the autonomy of local rulers by treating regents more like state officials. These changes increased colonial demands on people and resources, raising tensions in a region already shaped by the post-Giyanti political order.
British forces launched a major invasion of Java and defeated the colonial government, beginning a period of British administration. This transition disrupted existing Dutch political arrangements and reopened questions about how to manage the Javanese courts. The interregnum also introduced new policies and alliances that affected Yogyakarta and Surakarta.
British-led forces attacked and captured the Yogyakarta palace complex, deposing Sultan Hamengkubuwono II. The event sharply reduced Yogyakarta’s ability to act independently and demonstrated that European powers could directly reshape court politics by force. It also influenced later Dutch strategies for managing central Java through controlled princely allies.
The Principality of Pakualaman was created as a smaller hereditary state within Yogyakarta, led by Paku Alam I. It functioned as a “mirror” to Mangkunegaran, further balancing power among Javanese elites while reinforcing colonial influence through new patronage ties. The added fragmentation made coordinated resistance to colonial rule more difficult.
Rising grievances—about court politics, land, taxation, and colonial interference—helped spark a major rebellion led by Prince Diponegoro. The war drew in Dutch forces and their Javanese allies, including the princely states created after Giyanti. It became one of the most important turning points of this era, transforming the relationship between the courts and colonial power.
In the same year the war ended, the Dutch introduced the Cultivation System (Cultuurstelsel), requiring villages to devote labor or land to export crops for state revenue. This marked a shift from primarily political control to much deeper economic extraction. The policy became a lasting legacy of the post-Giyanti era: fragmented courts remained, but the colonial state’s reach into rural life expanded sharply.
Dutch commander Hendrik Merkus de Kock arrested Diponegoro during a meeting in Magelang, effectively breaking the rebellion’s central leadership. The capture mattered because it accelerated the collapse of organized resistance and confirmed Dutch dominance over central Java’s political order. Diponegoro was then exiled, and the courts operated under tighter colonial supervision.
