In 1565, navigator Andrés de Urdaneta used a northward route and ocean currents to sail from the Philippines back to Acapulco, solving the key problem of returning east across the Pacific. This "return route" (tornaviaje) made regular two-way trade possible and laid the navigational foundation for the Manila Galleon system.
In 1571, Miguel López de Legazpi established Manila as the capital of Spain’s new colony in the Philippines. Manila’s protected harbor and position near Asian trading routes made it a practical hub where goods could be gathered for trans-Pacific shipping.
By the early 1570s, Spanish authorities began organizing regular voyages between Manila and Acapulco. The route linked Asian markets (especially Chinese goods arriving in Manila) with American silver from New Spain, creating a long-lasting trade circuit across the Pacific.
Spain created the Real Audiencia of Manila (a high court with major administrative roles) by royal decree in 1583 and set it up in 1584. This strengthened colonial governance in a colony heavily shaped by oceanic trade and security concerns, including dependence on the galleon system.
In 1587, English privateer Thomas Cavendish captured the Manila galleon Santa Ana, showing how valuable—and vulnerable—the galleon cargoes were. Such attacks pushed Spain to treat the route as both a trade system and a security problem, requiring escorts, fortifications, and tighter controls.
In 1593, the Spanish Crown restricted the Manila–Acapulco trade to limit competition with Spain’s Atlantic commerce and to reduce uncontrolled flows of silver and Asian goods. Regulations set rules on the number of ships and imposed official value limits on cargo (commonly summarized as a fixed yearly cap on exports from Manila and a higher cap on silver returns).
In October 1603, tensions between Spanish authorities and the Chinese community (Sangley) in and around Manila erupted into violence and a large-scale massacre. Because Chinese merchants and artisans were central to supplying Asian goods for the galleons, the crisis highlighted how the galleon economy depended on local and regional Asian networks, not just Spanish shipping.
In 1626, a galleon from Acapulco brought the image later known as Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage to the Philippines. Over time, the devotion became associated with protection for travelers and seafarers, reflecting how the galleon route shaped religious practice and community life alongside commerce.
During the Seven Years’ War, Britain captured Manila in 1762 and targeted the galleons’ incoming silver. In late 1762, British naval forces captured the treasure galleon Santísima Trinidad, underscoring how European wars could directly disrupt Manila’s lifeline and the wider trans-Pacific flow of silver and goods.
In 1785, Spain chartered the Royal Company of the Philippines to expand and reorganize trade and reduce reliance on the Manila–Acapulco route. The company aimed to strengthen Spain’s direct commercial role in Asia, contributing to a long-term shift away from the older galleon-centered monopoly.
In 1813, Spain’s Cortes of Cádiz moved to suppress the Manila–Acapulco galleon system as imperial policy shifted toward freer trade and away from rigid monopolies. The decree marked an official turning point: the galleon was no longer treated as the central, protected route for Pacific commerce.
In 1815, the last galleon voyage is commonly dated to the ship known as Magallanes (also called San Fernando), marking the practical end of the Manila–Acapulco route. The collapse of Spanish control in the Americas and the move toward new trading patterns meant Manila’s economy had to adapt beyond the old annual galleon exchange of Asian goods for American silver.
