Spain’s 1578 campaign against Brunei and its allies (including Sulu and Maguindanao) widened conflict between Spanish authorities in Manila and Muslim polities in the southern Philippines. Although Spain briefly captured Brunei’s capital area, the larger struggle ended without lasting Spanish control in Borneo. This early clash helped set the pattern of repeated Spanish expeditions and sustained Moro resistance.
In 1599–1600, fleets linked to Maguindanao, Buayan, and Sulu raided Spanish-held Visayan islands, taking captives and disrupting coastal settlements. The raids showed how maritime power and mobility could bypass Spanish strongpoints. They also pushed Spanish officials to treat the southern frontier as a major security problem, not only a missionary or trade concern.
From February to May 1602, Spanish forces tried to capture Jolo to curb raiding and assert authority in Sulu. The campaign ended unsuccessfully, underscoring that Spain lacked the local control, logistics, and manpower needed for a decisive occupation. Continued resistance in Sulu kept Spanish influence in the south limited and contested.
In 1635, Spain began building a major stone fort at Zamboanga (initially the Real Fuerte de San José, later known as Fort Pilar). The fort aimed to protect shipping lanes and serve as a forward base against raiding and resistance from nearby sultanates. Its construction marked a shift toward long-term military infrastructure in Mindanao.
In March 1637, Governor Sebastián Hurtado de Corcuera launched a major attack from Zamboanga into Maguindanao areas, winning a notable battle but not ending resistance. The fighting highlighted how Spanish offensives often achieved short-term victories without securing lasting political submission. For Maguindanao leaders, the campaigns reinforced the need for broader alliances and continued defense.
Beginning in January 1638, Spanish forces occupied Jolo during a larger attempt to control Sulu and reduce maritime raiding. The occupation proved temporary and ended with Spanish withdrawal by 1646, showing how difficult it was to hold territory amid local resistance and shifting regional alliances. The episode became a key example of Spain’s repeated “take-and-lose” pattern in the southern archipelago.
In 1639, Sultan Muhammad Kudarat met with leaders around Lake Lanao and urged them not to submit to Spanish rule. Spanish sources record this as a turning point that helped mobilize local resistance and limited Spanish ability to push inland. The result was a more resilient defensive posture among southern communities facing Spanish pressure.
In the early 1660s, Spanish officials concentrated forces to defend Manila after threats connected to Koxinga’s regional power. As part of this crisis, Spain evacuated its fort at Zamboanga in 1663, weakening its frontier position in Mindanao. The withdrawal gave Moro polities more room to regroup and reinforced that Spain’s southern strategy depended heavily on events far beyond Mindanao.
In 1718–1719, Spain rebuilt and strengthened the Zamboanga fortifications, restoring a key base for coastal defense and expeditions. This rebuilding signaled a renewed commitment to sustained military presence in the south after earlier retrenchment. It also fed a cycle: stronger Spanish positions prompted continued attacks and counterattacks in surrounding seas and shorelines.
In February 1848, Spain mounted a large amphibious assault on Balanguingui Island, a stronghold associated with raiding networks in the Sulu Archipelago. The campaign captured forts and weaponry and was intended to disrupt attacks on coastal communities. Even with this victory, raiding and resistance did not end, showing the conflict’s resilience and regional reach.
In April 1851, Spain and the Sultanate of Sulu concluded a treaty in which the Sultan acknowledged Spanish sovereignty, while Spain promised to respect Islam and sought to restrict alliances with other foreign powers. The agreement aimed to reduce raiding and bring Sulu within Spain’s legal framework, but enforcement remained uneven. It showed Spain increasingly using treaties—alongside force—to claim authority it could not fully impose.
In 1876, Spain launched a massive expedition and captured Jolo, establishing a stronger garrison and fortifications than earlier attempts. The occupation was meant to consolidate control over Sulu and curb raiding, especially as other Western powers showed interest in the region. Despite the capture, Spanish security remained fragile and attacks continued, demonstrating that occupation did not equal full control.
On July 22, 1878, the Sultan of Sulu signed agreements described as “Bases of Peace and Capitulation,” which Spanish accounts treated as confirming Spanish sovereignty and allowing garrisons. In practice, Spanish control was strongest in military posts and limited settlement areas, with much authority remaining contested. The agreement reflected Spain’s late-19th-century strategy of combining fortification, treaties, and selective occupation.
In 1885, Spain, Great Britain, and Germany signed the Madrid Protocol, which recognized Spain’s sovereignty over the Sulu Archipelago while Spain renounced claims over North Borneo. The agreement mattered because it reduced European rivalry over Sulu and strengthened Spain’s diplomatic position. It did not eliminate local resistance, but it shaped the late Spanish colonial “endgame” in the southern Philippines.
During the Philippine Revolution, revolutionary forces besieged and captured Fort Pilar in May 1898, one of the most significant anti-Spanish actions in Mindanao. The capture showed that Spanish military positions were weakening even in frontier strongholds. It also helped create a local revolutionary government, though control soon shifted again as new colonial power arrived.
On December 10, 1898, Spain and the United States signed the Treaty of Paris, in which Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States. For Moro–Spanish conflict history, this treaty marks the end of Spain as the main colonial power confronting Muslim resistance in Mindanao and Sulu. The struggle over sovereignty did not end, but it moved into a new phase under American rule.
