In August 1896, Spanish authorities uncovered the Katipunan, a secret revolutionary society. Raids and arrests followed, pushing many members to choose open revolt rather than continued underground organizing. This discovery helped turn a reform movement into an armed revolution.
In late August 1896, Katipunan members gathered near Manila and publicly defied Spanish rule, symbolized in many accounts by tearing their community tax certificates (cédulas). Philippine government tradition recognizes August 23, 1896, though the exact date and place are debated. The event marked the start of the Philippine Revolution as an open uprising.
On August 30, 1896, revolutionaries attacked Spanish positions at San Juan del Monte (often linked to the Pinaglabanan area). The Spanish won, but the fighting showed the revolt had become a major security crisis. Spanish authorities responded by expanding repression and declaring martial law in key provinces.
From September 1–3, 1896, Filipino forces in Cavite defeated Spanish troops at Imus. Cavite became a strong base for the revolution, helping leaders like Emilio Aguinaldo gain influence. The fighting also showed the uprising could win major engagements outside Manila.
On December 30, 1896, José Rizal was executed by firing squad at Bagumbayan (now Luneta). Although Rizal had advocated reforms rather than armed revolt, his death became a powerful symbol of Spanish repression. The execution intensified anti-colonial sentiment and strengthened support for independence.
On February 17, 1897, Filipino forces fought Spanish troops at Zapote Bridge on the Manila–Cavite boundary. The revolutionaries won the battle, but Edilberto Evangelista—known for helping build trenches and defenses—was killed. His death underscored how the revolution depended on both fighters and organizers with technical skills.
On March 22, 1897, revolutionary factions met at the Tejeros Convention in Cavite to address leadership disputes. Emilio Aguinaldo was elected president of a new revolutionary government, weakening Andrés Bonifacio’s authority as Katipunan leader. The split created internal conflict at a time when Spanish forces were increasing pressure.
On May 10, 1897, Andrés Bonifacio was executed after being arrested, tried, and convicted of treason by rival revolutionary leaders. His death removed the founder of the Katipunan and deepened divisions within the revolutionary movement. The leadership struggle also shaped how the revolution reorganized into a more formal government under Aguinaldo.
On December 14, 1897, Spanish authorities and Aguinaldo’s revolutionary government agreed to the Pact of Biak-na-Bato. The truce offered amnesty and money in exchange for ending hostilities, and Aguinaldo and other leaders went into exile in Hong Kong. The agreement reduced fighting temporarily but did not resolve the demand for independence.
On May 1, 1898, U.S. naval forces under Commodore George Dewey defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay. Spain’s naval defeat weakened its ability to defend the colony and changed the revolution’s international context. The Philippines became a major theater of the Spanish–American War.
On May 19, 1898, Emilio Aguinaldo returned to the Philippines after exile in Hong Kong. He announced the renewal of the struggle against Spain and helped reorganize revolutionary forces. His return linked the revolution’s goals with the rapidly changing military situation created by the Spanish–American War.
On May 28, 1898, Filipino forces defeated Spanish troops at Alapan, Imus, Cavite. The victory became closely associated with the first public display of the Philippine flag, later commemorated as National Flag Day. The event helped build a visible national identity alongside the military campaign.
On June 12, 1898, Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine independence from Spain in Cavite el Viejo (now Kawit). The declaration asserted sovereignty and introduced national symbols in a public ceremony. However, Spain and other powers did not broadly recognize the declaration at the time.
On September 15, 1898, the Malolos Congress opened at Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan. It served as a revolutionary legislature tasked with building institutions for a new state, including drafting a constitution. This shift from battlefield leadership to formal governance marked a major transition in the revolution.
On December 10, 1898, Spain and the United States signed the Treaty of Paris ending the Spanish–American War. Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States, effectively ending Spanish colonial rule. The treaty also set the stage for a new conflict, as Filipino revolutionaries sought independence rather than a change of colonial ruler.
