After the collapse of Ngô dynasty authority, regional commanders fought for control across northern Vietnam. This breakdown (965–968) set the immediate background for a new unifying monarchy. The period is remembered as the “Anarchy of the 12 Warlords.”
In 968, Đinh Bộ Lĩnh defeated rival warlords and proclaimed a unified state, adopting the name Đại Cồ Việt. He set up a royal court at Hoa Lư (in today’s Ninh Bình), helping turn a patchwork of local strongmen into a more centralized kingdom. This is the usual starting point for the Đinh dynasty and the Đại Cồ Việt era.
After unification, the Đinh court operated from Hoa Lư, a naturally defensible area of rivers and limestone mountains. Locating the capital there helped the new regime stabilize rule during a period when internal revolt and external pressure were both realistic threats. Hoa Lư remained the political center through the Early Lê period.
In 970, Đinh Bộ Lĩnh adopted the era name Thái Bình and began minting cash coins, marking an important step in state-building. The Thái Bình Hưng Bảo coinage is widely described as the earliest native Vietnamese cash coin series. Issuing coins supported taxation, payments, and the symbols of royal authority.
By the early 970s, the Đinh regime assigned key posts and strengthened the court’s command structure, including top military leadership. This mattered because the new monarchy needed dependable commanders and administrators to prevent a return to regional warlordism. One result was the rise of powerful military figures who would later shape succession politics.
In the 970s, Đại Cồ Việt opened formal relations with the Song dynasty through embassies. This diplomacy aimed to reduce the risk of invasion by framing relations in the common East Asian tributary-style system, while still maintaining local rule. Managing Song relations became a major thread running through the Đinh and Early Lê years.
In 979, Đinh Bộ Lĩnh and his eldest son Đinh Liễn were assassinated at court, creating an immediate power crisis. A child (Đinh Toàn, often known as Đinh Phế Đế) succeeded, leaving real authority contested among senior officials and generals. This instability helped trigger external danger from the Song.
Amid the succession crisis, the commander Lê Hoàn became the central figure in government and took the throne in 980, beginning the Early Lê dynasty (also called the Anterior Lê). This transfer of power was justified as necessary to meet military threats and restore effective leadership. The state name Đại Cồ Việt continued to be used.
In 981, Song forces invaded Đại Cồ Việt by land and sea. Lê Hoàn’s defense forced the Song to withdraw, and the conflict ended with a Đại Cồ Việt victory. The outcome was a major turning point: it strengthened the new dynasty’s legitimacy and kept local independence intact.
In 982, Lê Hoàn launched a military expedition against Champa, sacking major sites and killing the Cham ruler Paramesvaravarman I in the fighting. The campaign disrupted northern Champa and is often treated as an early marker of increasing Vietnamese pressure to the south. It also shows how Đại Cồ Việt balanced northern defense with southern ambitions.
After the 981 war, Đại Cồ Việt resumed diplomatic ties with the Song. By the 990s, Song envoys and titles helped stabilize relations, including recognition of Lê Hoàn as a “king” in the Chinese diplomatic framework. This arrangement reduced immediate conflict risk while letting Đại Cồ Việt operate as a self-governing monarchy in practice.
Lê Hoàn died in 1005, and competing claims among his sons triggered a destabilizing succession conflict. The dispute weakened central authority and set the stage for rapid changes on the throne. This shows a key vulnerability of the early monarchy: power depended heavily on personal rule and military support.
Later in 1005, Lê Long Việt briefly became emperor but reigned for only about three days before being killed. His death removed one compromise candidate and escalated fears among court officials. It also cleared the way for Lê Long Đĩnh to dominate the succession.
Lê Long Đĩnh died on 19 November 1009, ending the last reign of the Early Lê line. His death created an opening for a new ruling house, since the court did not transition smoothly to a stable heir. This moment is commonly used to mark the close of the Đinh–Early Lê phase of Đại Cồ Việt politics.
In 1009, Lý Công Uẩn (later Lý Thái Tổ) was enthroned, founding the Lý dynasty and ending the Early Lê political order. The accession is significant because it began a longer-lasting dynasty and reshaped the direction of the kingdom after decades of fragile successions. In timeline terms, it is the clear transition out of the Đinh and Early Lê period (968–1009).
