Before Âu Lạc, northern Vietnam was home to the Đông Sơn culture, known for bronze drums, wet-rice farming, and river-based trade. Later Vietnamese histories describe an earlier polity called Văn Lang ruled by Hùng kings, though many details are a mix of archaeology and later tradition. This background helps explain why a new fortified capital and stronger kingship mattered in the 3rd century BCE.
Vietnamese tradition places a major political change around 257 BCE, when a leader known as Thục Phán defeated the last Hùng king and united Âu Việt and Lạc Việt groups. He is remembered as An Dương Vương, the founding (and only) ruler of Âu Lạc. This unification marks the start of the Âu Lạc story as a kingdom centered on the Red River Delta.
After taking power, An Dương Vương is credited with establishing his capital at Cổ Loa, north of present-day Hanoi. The site’s multiple ramparts and surrounding waterways made it a strong defensive and administrative center. Making Cổ Loa the capital signaled a shift toward more centralized rule than earlier, looser alliances of local leaders.
Cổ Loa’s defenses included large, concentric embankments (earth walls) and moats, creating a layered fortress. Archaeological studies suggest parts of the inner rampart date earlier than Âu Lạc, indicating long-term local construction traditions that were expanded or reorganized as the capital grew. The scale of these earthworks reflects the ability to mobilize labor and resources on a kingdom-wide level.
Later texts and folklore connect An Dương Vương’s rule with the story of a powerful crossbow (often called a “divine” or “magic” crossbow), sometimes linked to the engineer Cao Lỗ. While the supernatural elements are legendary, the story shows how military strength and specialized craft knowledge became central to how Âu Lạc’s kingship was remembered. The legend also foreshadows the theme of vulnerability through betrayal and intelligence failures.
In accounts of this period, Âu Lạc is depicted as organizing leadership over local lords in the delta and nearby uplands, using Cổ Loa as the center. The kingdom’s location supported farming, river transport, and trade connections that helped sustain a larger political unit. This consolidation set the stage for later clashes with expanding states to the north.
After the Qin dynasty weakened and collapsed, control in southern China shifted to competing commanders and emerging states. This wider instability mattered for Âu Lạc because it opened a path for ambitious leaders in the south to build new kingdoms and seek expansion. The most important of these for northern Vietnam’s future was Nanyue (Nam Việt).
Zhao Tuo (Triệu Đà), a former Qin official, founded Nanyue with its center at Panyu (near modern Guangzhou). Nanyue controlled parts of modern Guangdong and Guangxi and became a major neighbor to Âu Lạc. The creation of Nanyue increased pressure on smaller polities to the south, including those in the Red River region.
Later Vietnamese and regional histories describe a period of tension and warfare between An Dương Vương’s Âu Lạc and Zhao Tuo’s Nanyue. Some modern historians note that early Chinese records do not clearly document a direct conquest story in detail, while later sources add more narrative. Even with these limits, the tradition consistently frames this era as the turning point when Âu Lạc faced its most serious external threat.
In Vietnamese tradition, Âu Lạc’s collapse is tied to the story of Mỵ Châu and Trọng Thủy, which explains defeat through espionage and betrayal rather than battlefield force alone. The story ends with An Dương Vương fleeing and dying after losing Cổ Loa. Regardless of its legendary features, it became a lasting explanation for how a fortified capital could still be overcome.
Many summaries of the Âu Lạc period place its end around 179 BCE, when Zhao Tuo’s Nanyue is said to have annexed the kingdom. This event marks the loss of independent rule centered at Cổ Loa and the start of closer integration with a larger Lingnan-based state. It also sets up the next transition, when Nanyue itself becomes a target of the Han Empire.
In 111 BCE, the Han dynasty conquered Nanyue and absorbed its territories, including areas corresponding to the former Âu Lạc. This shift is often treated as the start of a long era of Chinese imperial administration in northern Vietnam (later remembered as an early “Northern Domination” period). As an outcome, Âu Lạc’s political legacy lived on mainly through the archaeological remains of Cổ Loa and the enduring An Dương Vương traditions.
