By the mid-6th century, Chinese writers began using the name Zhenla (Chenla) for inland Mekong-region rulers who had earlier been connected to Funan’s trade-centered network in the Mekong Delta. This marks the start of a new phase in which power was increasingly organized around multiple local courts rather than a single Funan center.
Bhavavarman I is commonly listed among the early rulers associated with Chenla’s rise in the late 6th century. His reign is part of the period when Mekong-region courts expanded their influence through alliances, temple patronage, and control of key routes linking uplands to the delta.
Inscriptions record that Citrasena took the royal name Mahendravarman and presented himself as a victorious ruler who “defeated all the countries” in a formal, inscriptional style. Such texts are important because they show how Mekong-region kings used Sanskrit and temple gifts to claim authority across a wide, multi-polity landscape.
Isanavarman I’s reign is a key turning point because it is linked to stronger central royal display and major building activity. Later historical reconstructions also connect his period with Chenla’s expanding influence over earlier Funan-associated territories.
Chinese court records note a Chenla (Zhenla) embassy to the Sui dynasty in 616–617, showing that Mekong-region rulers were engaged in long-distance diplomacy. These missions mattered because recognition and titles from China could support a ruler’s prestige at home and with neighboring polities.
Around 618, Isanavarman I is associated with founding Isanapura, identified with the Sambor Prei Kuk area in present-day Cambodia. Establishing a capital and ritual center helped coordinate temple building, administration, and elite networks in the middle Mekong–Tonle Sap region.
The temple zone at Sambor Prei Kuk (ancient Isanapura) developed distinctive pre-Angkor art and architecture, including many brick towers and unusual octagonal temples. UNESCO notes that this architectural and artistic tradition helped lay foundations for later Khmer styles associated with Angkor.
By the early 7th century, Funan is generally treated as ending, with many reconstructions placing Chenla’s takeover around 627. In practical terms, this shift reflects changing power along the Mekong: inland courts and temple-based authority became more prominent relative to the older delta-centered trade network.
An inscription at Isanapura is dated 13 September 627, providing a firm chronological anchor for Isanavarman I’s rule and temple-centered kingship. Such dated records are crucial because much of the region’s political history survives mainly through inscriptions and later compilations.
Jayavarman I is often described as the last major ruler of a more unified Chenla before later fragmentation. After his reign, succession disputes and regional rivalries made it harder for one court to dominate the many Mekong and delta polities.
In the early 8th century, Chinese sources and later historians describe Chenla as divided into Land Chenla (more inland) and Water Chenla (more southern and river/coastal). This fragmentation fits a pattern of Southeast Asian “mandala” politics, where multiple centers could rise and fall without fixed borders.
In 802, Jayavarman II is recorded in later tradition as establishing a new, more centralized political order that historians call the beginning of the Angkor (Khmer) Empire. This moment is often used as the endpoint of the Chenla period because it marks a shift from fragmented regional courts toward an empire with stronger royal ideology and longer-lived capitals.
