As the Qin dynasty weakened and collapsed, its commanderies in the far south (Lingnan) became difficult for any central government to control. Local commanders and elites had room to act independently, setting the stage for a new regional kingdom.
Zhao Tuo, a former Qin general in the south, founded the kingdom of Nanyue and made Panyu (in modern Guangzhou) his capital. The new state combined former Qin administrative practices with local Yue political realities, creating a durable frontier kingdom.
The early Han dynasty chose diplomacy rather than immediate conquest. Emperor Gaozu sent envoy Lu Jia, who recognized Zhao Tuo as king of Nanyue in exchange for nominal submission, helping stabilize relations while leaving Nanyue largely autonomous in practice.
Under Empress Lü, Han officials restricted key trade (notably iron and horses) with Nanyue. Zhao Tuo responded by declaring himself “emperor” and launching attacks toward Han territory (including Changsha), showing how economic pressure could quickly become a political and military crisis.
Nanyue’s rulers expanded southward into Âu Lạc, linking the kingdom more directly to the Red River area of what is now northern Vietnam. This expansion helped shape later histories, because it connected local societies to a state centered in Panyu and tied to Chinese-style commandery governance.
After Zhao Tuo’s long reign, leadership passed to Zhao Mo (often called the second ruler/king of Nanyue). The succession kept the Zhao family in power and preserved the kingdom’s hybrid political style—part Han-administrative, part local Yue—while Han influence continued to grow around it.
Over time, the prime minister Lü Jia became a central power-holder in Nanyue politics, representing a strong anti-interference faction among leading elites. His position mattered because it set up a later confrontation between pro-Han court policies and leaders who feared loss of autonomy.
Late in the kingdom’s history, King Zhao Xing and his mother, Queen Dowager Jiu (Han Chinese by origin), favored closer submission to the Han empire. This policy shift heightened internal tensions, because many Nanyue leaders saw it as surrendering control to outsiders.
In 112 BCE, Lü Jia led a coup that killed King Zhao Xing, Queen Dowager Jiu, and Han envoys in the capital. The coup ended the pro-Han policy and transformed a tense relationship into open war with the Han dynasty.
After the coup, Zhao Jiande was installed as king while Lü Jia effectively directed resistance. Emperor Wu of Han responded with a major invasion led by generals including Lu Bode and Yang Pu, scaling up from diplomacy to a decisive campaign to eliminate Nanyue’s independence.
Han forces captured Panyu (modern Guangzhou) and defeated the remaining Nanyue leadership. With the conquest in 111 BCE, Nanyue was annexed into the Han empire, ending Zhao-family rule and reorganizing the region under Han administration.
After annexation, Han authorities established or reorganized commanderies in the former Nanyue territory, including areas of northern Vietnam. This marked the start of what Vietnamese histories often describe as the first long period of direct Chinese imperial rule, a major political turning point for the region’s later development.
