In 1225, the last ruler of the Lý dynasty, Empress Lý Chiêu Hoàng, transferred the throne to her husband Trần Cảnh. This political transition, guided by powerful court figures, marked the start of Trần rule over Đại Việt. It set up a new dynasty that soon faced major external threats and internal reforms.
In early 1226, Trần Cảnh formally ascended the throne and took the regnal name Trần Thái Tông. The new dynasty consolidated control of the royal court and state administration from the capital at Thăng Long (modern Hanoi). This early stability helped the Trần prepare for the regional power struggles of the 1200s.
In January 1258, Mongol forces under Uriyangkhadai defeated Trần troops at Bình Lệ Nguyên, breaking Vietnamese war-elephant lines. The Trần court abandoned Thăng Long as the invasion pressed toward the capital. The battle showed the urgent need for flexible strategy against fast-moving steppe armies.
Days after Thăng Long was taken and sacked, Trần forces launched a surprise counterattack and forced the Mongols to withdraw. The rapid reversal helped preserve Trần authority and demonstrated a pattern the dynasty would repeat: retreat, disrupt supply lines, and counterattack at the right moment. This first victory became a foundation for later resistance against the Yuan.
In 1285, the Yuan dynasty launched a major invasion of Đại Việt, sending forces through the northern passes. The Trần leadership again chose strategic withdrawal rather than defending fixed positions at all costs. The campaign pushed Đại Việt into a high-stakes war for survival and independence.
On 24 June 1285, Trần commanders won a decisive victory at Chương Dương, destroying much of the Yuan river fleet and killing the general Sogetu. River transport was crucial in the Red River Delta, so this victory directly weakened Yuan operations. It helped set up the broader Trần counteroffensive that forced Yuan withdrawal.
On 9 April 1288, Trần Hưng Đạo used a tidal ambush and underwater stakes to trap and destroy a Yuan fleet on the Bạch Đằng River. The defeat ended the third invasion and helped convince Yuan leadership that conquering Đại Việt would be too costly. The battle became a long-lasting symbol of Vietnamese defensive strategy and state resilience.
In 1293, Emperor Trần Nhân Tông passed the throne to his son Trần Anh Tông while remaining influential as a retired ruler. This planned abdication helped keep the dynasty stable after decades of war. It also reflects a Trần pattern of shared governance between a reigning emperor and a retired emperor.
In 1299, the retired emperor Trần Nhân Tông founded the Trúc Lâm ("Bamboo Grove") Zen tradition at Yên Tử Mountain. Trúc Lâm blended Vietnamese Buddhist practice with elements of Confucian and Taoist thought, shaping elite culture during the Trần era. This religious development became part of the dynasty’s long-term legacy beyond warfare and politics.
In 1306, Princess Huyền Trân married the Champa king Jaya Simhavarman III (Chế Mân). In exchange, Champa ceded the provinces of Châu Ô and Châu Lý to Đại Việt, expanding Trần territory southward. The agreement shows how diplomacy and marriage could reshape borders as much as battle.
In 1369, Dương Nhật Lễ—who was not from the Trần royal line—took the throne, triggering a legitimacy crisis in the capital. His rule deepened court conflict and undermined confidence in the dynasty. This episode signaled weakening central control and contributed to the instability of the late Trần period.
In 1370, Trần princes deposed Dương Nhật Lễ and restored the Trần line by enthroning Trần Nghệ Tông. Although the coup re-established formal legitimacy, it did not end the deeper problems of factional politics and external pressure. The late Trần court increasingly relied on powerful ministers, setting the stage for future takeover.
In 1377, Đại Việt attacked Vijaya, the Champa capital, but suffered a major defeat; Emperor Trần Duệ Tông was killed. The loss weakened Trần military credibility and encouraged further Cham raids northward, including attacks on Thăng Long. The war with Champa became a major drain during a period of internal political strain.
In 1397, the powerful minister Hồ Quý Ly oversaw construction of the stone citadel of Tây Đô in Thanh Hóa. The new fortress and administrative center strengthened Hồ’s position and foreshadowed a move away from the long-standing capital at Thăng Long. It reflected how late Trần rulers were increasingly overshadowed by dominant court officials.
On 23 March 1400, Hồ Quý Ly forced the last Trần ruler, Trần Thiếu Đế, to cede the throne, formally ending the Trần dynasty. He established the Hồ dynasty, renaming the state and installing his family at the center of power. The Trần legacy remained influential, but the transfer marked a clear political break and the start of a new, unstable era.
