In 1354, Ottoman forces took Gallipoli after an earthquake damaged its defenses. This gave the Ottomans a strategic bridgehead across the Dardanelles, making sustained campaigns and administration in the Balkans possible.
In the 1360s the Ottomans captured Adrianople (Edirne), a major Byzantine city. It later served as an Ottoman capital before 1453, helping the empire direct military operations and provincial governance across the Balkans.
On June 28, 1389 (June 15 in the Julian calendar), Ottoman and Serbian-led forces fought at Kosovo Polje; both leaders died. Over time, the battle became linked to Serbia’s political weakening and the expansion of Ottoman power and vassal relationships in the central Balkans.
From the late 14th century, the Ottoman state developed the devshirme (“child levy”), taking Christian boys—many from the Balkans—into state service. The system helped staff the Janissary military and high administration, tightening central control over Balkan provinces.
In 1430, the Ottomans captured Thessaloniki, a key port and regional hub. Control of this city strengthened Ottoman authority in Macedonia and supported the long-term integration of the northern Aegean into Ottoman provincial systems.
On May 29, 1453, the Ottomans captured Constantinople after a weeks-long siege. The conquest removed a major rival power and strengthened Ottoman capacity to govern, tax, and defend Balkan territories as part of a more centralized imperial system.
In 1459, Ottoman forces captured Smederevo, bringing the Serbian Despotate to an end. This helped shift remaining Serbian lands into direct Ottoman rule or tighter Ottoman oversight, increasing the role of Ottoman-appointed officials and garrisons in local governance.
In 1463, the Ottoman conquest of the Kingdom of Bosnia marked a major territorial expansion into the western Balkans. Ottoman authorities then faced the practical work of building governance—fortresses, taxes, and local administration—while also confronting nearby rival powers, especially Hungary.
On January 26, 1699, the Treaty of Karlowitz ended a major war with the Holy League and transferred large areas (including much of Hungary and Transylvania) away from Ottoman control. Although many Balkan provinces remained Ottoman, the treaty signaled a long-term shift: the empire was increasingly defending its European frontiers rather than expanding them.
Beginning in 1821, the Greek War of Independence challenged Ottoman authority in the southern Balkans. Greece’s eventual independence showed that nationalist revolts could break Ottoman provincial control and encouraged further uprisings elsewhere in the region.
Starting in 1839, the Tanzimat reforms sought to modernize the Ottoman state, including law, military organization, and provincial administration. In the Balkans, these reforms aimed to strengthen central authority and reduce uneven local rule, while also promising greater legal equality for non-Muslims—promises that were unevenly realized.
On November 8, 1864, the Ottoman government issued the Vilayet Law, reorganizing provinces and replacing the older eyalet system. The reform created a more standardized hierarchy of governors and councils, intended to make taxation, security, and public administration more consistent across Balkan territories.
In 1878, the Congress of Berlin revised earlier war settlements and restructured control in the Balkans. Several states gained independence or autonomy, while Austria-Hungary was authorized to occupy and administer Bosnia and Herzegovina, reducing Ottoman administrative reach in the western Balkans.
In 1912–1913, the Balkan League defeated the Ottoman Empire and captured much of its remaining European territory. The settlement in 1913 confirmed that Ottoman administration in the Balkans had largely ended, leaving the empire with only a small area in Europe (mainly parts of Thrace).
