Christopher Columbus reached the island he named La Isla Española (Hispaniola) during his first Atlantic voyage for the Spanish Crown. This contact opened the way for Spanish claims and settlement on an island already inhabited by Taíno societies. Hispaniola soon became Spain’s main base for colonizing the Caribbean.
After the ship Santa María was wrecked, Columbus’s crew built a small fort known as La Navidad using salvaged materials. Columbus left a group of Spaniards behind, creating the first European outpost on Hispaniola. The settlement depended heavily on local Taíno relations and quickly became unstable.
When Columbus returned on his second voyage, he found La Navidad burned and the settlement’s Spaniards dead. Accounts link the collapse to conflict fueled by Spanish abuse and internal disorder. The destruction pushed the Spanish to found a new base elsewhere on the island.
Columbus established La Isabela on Hispaniola as a planned colonial town and administrative base. It was intended to secure Spanish control and support searches for gold and other wealth. Disease, food shortages, and conflict made the settlement difficult to sustain, and it was later abandoned.
A new settlement that became Santo Domingo was founded on Hispaniola and developed into Spain’s key city in the Caribbean. It provided a more durable administrative center than earlier northern sites. Over time, it served as a launching point for Spanish expansion across the wider region.
Nicolás de Ovando arrived in Santo Domingo with a large expedition to impose stronger royal control and expand settlement. Under his governorship, Spanish rule became more systematic and more coercive toward the Taíno. His policies helped reshape Hispaniola into a labor- and tribute-extracting colony.
Spanish authorities used repartimientos (forced allocations) to assign Taíno labor to Spanish colonists through encomiendas—grants that claimed to exchange “protection” and Christian instruction for labor. In practice, the system enabled harsh exploitation and intensified demographic collapse from overwork, violence, and disease. This was a major turning point in how Spain controlled people and production on Hispaniola.
The Spanish Crown created the Real Audiencia of Santo Domingo, a high court that also supported royal administration. It was an early effort to strengthen oversight of colonial officials and settlers. Although its authority evolved over time, it marked Hispaniola’s importance in Spain’s Caribbean governance.
The Laws of Burgos set rules for Spanish treatment and labor use of Indigenous people in the Americas, including Hispaniola. The laws declared Indigenous people to be free but still required them to work under colonial supervision, aiming to formalize the encomienda system. They show how Spanish policy tried to justify and manage forced labor rather than end it.
A Dominican-run school in Santo Domingo was elevated to university status by a papal bull, a major sign of a maturing colonial city with institutions for training clergy and officials. Later royal recognition strengthened its standing within the Spanish Empire. The university became part of the long-term cultural and administrative footprint of Spanish colonization on Hispaniola.
To reduce smuggling and foreign trade outside Spanish control, Spanish authorities forced residents out of northern and western areas of Hispaniola and destroyed settlements and farms. Instead of securing the frontier, the depopulated zones made it easier for non-Spanish groups to settle and operate there. This policy helped set the stage for a lasting split of the island.
The Treaty of Ryswick ended the Nine Years’ War and included Spain’s formal cession of the western third of Hispaniola to France. France developed this area as Saint-Domingue, while Spain retained the east as Santo Domingo. This diplomatic settlement marked a clear end point for Spain’s period of uncontested control over the whole island.
