In 1931, Aimé Césaire left Martinique for Paris to study, entering the French school system that trained many future political and cultural leaders. Living in the colonial “metropole” helped him compare French republican ideals with the realities of racism and empire. This experience shaped both his later writing and his political goals for Martinique.
In March 1935, Césaire created the journal L’Étudiant noir with other Black students in Paris. The publication argued against cultural assimilation and encouraged solidarity across Caribbean and African identities. It became an early platform for ideas that would soon be known as Négritude.
In the May–June 1935 issue of L’Étudiant noir, Césaire used “Négritude” as a positive term to name Black cultural identity and resistance to colonial thinking. The concept became central to a wider literary and intellectual movement. It gave a shared language to writers confronting racism and colonial rule.
On July 10, 1937, Aimé Césaire married Suzanne Roussi (later Suzanne Césaire) in Paris. Their partnership became important to Martinique’s wartime intellectual life, including later work on the journal Tropiques. Suzanne Césaire also developed her own influential writing and criticism.
In 1939, Césaire returned to Martinique and began teaching at Lycée Schoelcher in Fort-de-France. Teaching kept him closely connected to everyday life under colonial rule while he continued to write. This local base later supported his move into politics and cultural organizing on the island.
In August 1939, Césaire’s long poem Cahier d’un retour au pays natal was first published in the Paris journal Volontés. The poem connected personal return with a larger critique of colonialism and racial oppression. It quickly became a landmark text associated with the Négritude movement.
In April 1941, Aimé and Suzanne Césaire and René Ménil founded Tropiques, a cultural journal published in Fort-de-France. Under Vichy rule in Martinique, the journal defended Caribbean culture and criticized colonial domination, often using literature and surrealism as tools of resistance. Tropiques helped redefine Martinican cultural identity during the war years.
In 1945, Césaire was elected mayor of Fort-de-France and also elected deputy for Martinique to France’s National Assembly, with support from the French Communist Party. Holding local and national offices at the same time let him connect Martinique’s needs to decisions made in Paris. His political work increasingly focused on legal equality and social reforms for Martinique.
In 1946, Césaire published Les Armes miraculeuses with Gallimard, gathering poems that included work from the Tropiques period. The collection showed how his poetry blended surrealist imagery with political anger at colonialism. It helped strengthen his reputation as a major voice in Caribbean and Black Francophone literature.
On March 19, 1946, France passed the Law on Departmentalization, transforming Martinique (and several other former colonies) into an overseas department. Césaire played a leading role in pushing the measure through the National Assembly. The change aimed to replace colonial status with legal integration, though many social inequalities remained.
In January 1947, Cahier d’un retour au pays natal appeared in an expanded book form, bringing the poem to a wider audience beyond magazine readers. New editions helped cement it as a foundational work for Négritude and for modern Caribbean literature. The poem’s continuing revisions also reflected Césaire’s evolving political and artistic goals.
In 1950, Césaire published Discours sur le colonialisme, an essay arguing that colonialism damages both the colonized and the colonizers, and that “civilizing mission” claims hide exploitation and violence. The work linked his literary voice to a clear political argument. It became a widely cited text in later anti-colonial and postcolonial debates.
On October 24, 1956, Césaire resigned from the French Communist Party and addressed his reasons in Lettre à Maurice Thorez. He criticized the party’s handling of colonial questions and insisted that anti-racism and anti-colonialism could not be treated as secondary issues. The break marked a major shift toward a more Martinique-centered political strategy.
On March 22, 1958, Césaire and allies (including Pierre Aliker) founded the Parti progressiste martiniquais (PPM). The new party grew out of his split with the French Communist Party and promoted greater self-government for Martinique while remaining within the French Republic. This organizational step gave his long-term cultural critique a durable political form on the island.
In 1960, Césaire published Toussaint Louverture, a study of the Haitian revolutionary leader. By focusing on Haiti’s successful struggle against slavery and colonial power, he connected Caribbean history to the political questions facing Martinique and other colonized societies. The book also signaled a shift toward using historical writing—alongside poetry and speeches—to argue for Black freedom and dignity.
