Desmond Dekker & the Aces released “Israelites,” which soon reached No. 1 in the UK and became a major hit in multiple countries. Its success showed that Jamaican vocal style and patois could sell internationally, helping open doors for more reggae exports.
The Jamaican film The Harder They Come, starring Jimmy Cliff, reached audiences beyond Jamaica and became closely tied to its reggae soundtrack. The movie helped many international viewers connect reggae with Jamaican social realities and star personalities.
Bob Marley & The Wailers released Catch a Fire on Island Records, a major step into rock-album markets outside Jamaica. The release and touring around it helped present reggae as an album-focused music that could compete in global pop and rock spaces.
Gunmen attacked Bob Marley at his home on Hope Road just before the Smile Jamaica concert, and Marley and others were shot but survived. The incident reflected how closely reggae had become tied to Jamaica’s political conflict—and how dangerous that visibility could be.
Despite being shot two days earlier, Marley headlined the Smile Jamaica concert aimed at calming political violence. The performance strengthened his image as a unifying cultural figure and showed how reggae events could become national moments, not just entertainment.
After a period in London, Bob Marley & The Wailers released Exodus, which became one of the most influential reggae albums worldwide. Its themes and production helped define “roots reggae” for international audiences, linking Jamaican music to global conversations about faith, justice, and migration.
At the One Love Peace Concert in Kingston, Marley brought political rivals Michael Manley and Edward Seaga onstage and raised their joined hands. The gesture became an enduring symbol of reggae’s call for unity, even as violence and division continued in Jamaican politics.
The first Reggae Sunsplash festival took place in Montego Bay, creating a large-scale event built around reggae performances and tourism. It helped formalize reggae as a travel-linked “festival” culture and became a platform that attracted international attention to Jamaican acts.
The Specials released their debut album, a key milestone in the UK’s ska-and-reggae revival known as 2 Tone. By mixing Jamaican influences with British punk-era concerns, it showed how reggae rhythms could be adapted to new local politics and youth culture outside the Caribbean.
UB40 released Signing Off, a commercially successful reggae/dub-influenced album in Britain. By the early 1980s, this kind of success indicated a lasting outcome of reggae’s 1960s–1970s spread: reggae ideas had become part of everyday popular music markets beyond Jamaica.
