English colonists established the first permanent settlement in Barbados at what became Holetown (then Jamestown). This colonization created the legal and territorial basis for plantation landholding that later enabled large-scale sugar cultivation.
A representative assembly was established, consolidating planter political power and enabling local legislation that shaped labor control, land policy, and trade—key institutions for the emerging sugar plantation economy.
Barbadian sources credit Colonel Holdip at Locust Hall (St. George) with planting cane specifically for sugar production by 1640. This shift from earlier mixed crops toward sugar began the island’s transformation into a plantation-industrial landscape.
From the 1640s, rising European demand and high sugar prices prompted Barbados to reorganize landholding, capital investment, and labor around intensive sugar monoculture. The plantation complex expanded and relied increasingly on enslaved African labor.
By the mid-1640s, leading planters sought and imported Brazilian methods for producing muscovado sugar (including improved milling/boiling practices). These transfers accelerated productivity and helped drive the island’s rapid specialization in sugar.
During the English Civil War, Parliamentarian forces compelled Barbados to submit under the Treaty of Oistins. The settlement helped stabilize English authority and trade governance at a time when sugar exports were becoming central to the colony’s wealth.
Barbados passed a sweeping slave law that codified chattel slavery and strengthened owners’ legal control over enslaved Africans. The statute became influential in later slave codes elsewhere in English America and helped institutionalize plantation discipline.
Over the late 17th and 18th centuries, Barbados’s economy became heavily dependent on sugar and its by-products (notably molasses and rum). This reliance linked the island tightly to Atlantic trade and reinforced plantation wealth and labor coercion.
The British Parliament outlawed the transatlantic slave trade within the British Empire. For Barbados, this constrained new legal importation of enslaved Africans, increasing the economic importance of natural increase, inter-colonial transfers, and tighter labor control on sugar estates.
A major uprising of enslaved people began in St. Philip and spread across multiple parishes, involving many estates. Although suppressed, the revolt exposed the instability of plantation slavery and contributed to broader British debates over emancipation.
The Slavery Abolition Act took effect across most of the British Empire on this date. In Barbados, formerly enslaved people were reclassified as “apprentices,” binding labor to estates under a transitional regime rather than immediate full freedom.
Barbados enacted legislation to terminate praedial (agricultural) apprenticeship obligations effective 1 August 1838, ending the island’s apprenticeship regime earlier than the 1840 end-date envisioned for some categories under imperial policy.
