By the early 1500s, Spanish colonists in the Caribbean began bringing enslaved Africans into colonies such as Hispaniola (Santo Domingo). This accelerated as Indigenous populations were devastated by disease, warfare, and forced labor, pushing colonists to seek other coerced labor sources. These early arrivals set patterns for later large-scale transatlantic trafficking into the Caribbean.
The Spanish Crown created the asiento de negros system: contracts that granted a monopoly to supply enslaved Africans to Spanish America. A widely cited early contract began in 1517, marking a shift toward formal, large-scale, and regulated importation. The asiento system tied slavery directly to imperial finance by exchanging exclusive trading rights for payments and delivery quotas.
In August 1518, the Spanish monarchy granted a major license (often treated as an early “asiento”) allowing large-scale importation of enslaved Africans to Spanish territories. This helped normalize direct African sourcing for Caribbean labor needs, rather than relying only on enslaved people already in Iberia. The decision strengthened a commercial pipeline that linked West/Central Africa, European shippers, and Caribbean plantation and mining zones.
In August 1637, the Dutch captured Elmina on the Gold Coast (in present-day Ghana), a key European fortress used in coastal trade. Control of major forts affected who could buy captives, store them, and ship them across the Atlantic. The Dutch victory strengthened Dutch participation in the Atlantic system that supplied enslaved labor to Caribbean colonies.
In the 1640s, Barbados rapidly shifted from mixed farming toward sugar monoculture (a single-crop economy focused on sugar). Sugar required large, tightly controlled workforces, and planters increasingly relied on enslaved Africans to meet labor demands. This "Sugar Revolution" became a model for other Caribbean plantation colonies and increased transatlantic slave-trading volume into the region.
Barbados passed An Act for the better ordering and governing of Negroes in 1661, creating a detailed legal framework for racialized chattel slavery. The law formalized harsh controls over enslaved people and penalties for resistance, shaping later slave codes across the English Caribbean. Codifying slavery in law made the system more enforceable and more profitable for plantation owners.
In 1672, England chartered the Royal African Company, giving it major privileges in West African trade that included trafficking enslaved Africans. The company helped industrialize the trade by maintaining coastal forts and organizing regular shipping routes. Much of the captives it transported were sold into Caribbean plantation colonies, strengthening English power in the region’s slave economy.
The Treaties of Utrecht (1713–1714) ended the War of the Spanish Succession and reshaped imperial trade. In this settlement, Britain gained a major asiento contract to supply enslaved Africans to Spanish America, linking British finance and shipping more tightly to slavery in the Caribbean and beyond. The agreement encouraged both legal trafficking and illicit smuggling networks in the Spanish Caribbean.
After 1713, the British South Sea Company became the best-known holder of asiento rights, with contractual quotas for delivering enslaved Africans to Spanish colonies. The company’s operations used Caribbean hubs (including British islands) for holding and redistribution, tying regional shipping and credit to human trafficking. Competition, war, and smuggling repeatedly disrupted the contract, but the asiento still broadened Britain’s role in the wider Caribbean slave system.
On the night of 21 August 1791, enslaved people in the French colony of Saint-Domingue launched a massive uprising. The conflict disrupted one of the world’s richest plantation economies and showed that enslaved labor systems could be shaken by organized resistance. The revolution’s shockwaves affected slavery debates, security policies, and trade patterns across the Caribbean.
On 4 February 1794, France’s National Convention passed a decree abolishing slavery in French colonies. The law was closely connected to wartime pressures and revolution in Saint-Domingue, where events on the ground forced political decisions in Europe. Although slavery would later be restored by Napoleon in some colonies, the 1794 abolition marked a major turning point in Atlantic abolition politics.
On 25 March 1807, the British Parliament passed the Slave Trade Act 1807, prohibiting British participation in the transatlantic slave trade (effective 1 May 1807). Because Britain was a dominant slave-trading power, this changed enforcement patterns at sea and intensified international pressure on other states. The act did not end slavery in British colonies, but it marked a clear endpoint for the legal British trade that had fueled much of the Caribbean’s forced-labor system.
