In 1219, Genghis Khan launched a major campaign against the Khwarazmian Empire, a powerful state controlling key Silk Road cities in Central Asia. The invasion opened the way for Mongol rule in Transoxiana (the region between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya) and set the conditions for the later Chagatai Khanate.
The Mongols besieged Otrar, an important trading city on the Syr Darya, from December 1219 to February 1220. Commanded by Genghis Khan’s sons Chagatai and Ögedei, the capture of Otrar helped expose the Khwarazmian heartland to deeper Mongol attacks.
In February 1220, Mongol forces captured Bukhara, one of Central Asia’s major cities and a key hub on regional trade routes. Its fall showed how quickly Mongol armies could break city defenses, even in heavily urbanized parts of the region.
In March 1220, the Mongols besieged and took Samarkand, the Khwarazmian capital and one of the most famous Silk Road cities. The city’s defeat signaled the collapse of organized Khwarazmian resistance in much of Transoxiana.
By 1221, Mongol armies had defeated the Khwarazmian Empire across a wide area of Central Asia and Greater Iran. This victory brought the region firmly into the Mongol imperial system and made later Mongol successor states in Central Asia possible.
After Genghis Khan’s death, his son Chagatai received a large domain including Kashgaria and much of Transoxiana. This "ulus" (assigned territory within the Mongol imperial family) became the political foundation for what is commonly called the Chagatai Khanate.
After Baraq’s death in 1271, Kaidu of the Ögedeid line became the leading power in much of Central Asia and influenced Chagatai rulers for decades. His long conflict with Kublai Khan’s Yuan state helped make the Mongol successor realms more independent from any single center.
In the late 1260s, the Chagatai ruler Baraq challenged the wider Mongol political order and pursued expansion in the southwest. His campaign ended in defeat against the Ilkhanate at the Battle of Herat (1270), showing how the Mongol world had split into rival states.
Kaidu died in 1301, removing a major obstacle to diplomatic stabilization among Mongol successor states. In 1304, envoys helped establish a peace that briefly reduced conflict across the Mongol world, even though the khanates remained politically separate.
From 1314 to 1318, the Chagatai Khanate fought the Yuan dynasty and its ally, the Ilkhanate, in a conflict spanning Central Asia and nearby regions. The war ended with Yuan-Ilkhanate victory, underlining the Chagatai Khanate’s vulnerability to pressure on multiple fronts.
Kebek Khan (ruling in the early 1300s) strengthened administration and promoted the use of currency, which supported trade across the khanate. He also developed Qarshi (near modern Karshi, Uzbekistan) as a key political center, reflecting a stronger focus on governing settled regions.
Tarmashirin, one of the most prominent Chagatai rulers to convert to Islam, faced resistance from Mongol elites who favored older steppe traditions. He was overthrown and killed in 1334, and his fall helped accelerate internal instability and factional rivalry within the khanate.
In 1346, the powerful commander Amir Qazaghan defeated and killed Qazan Khan in Transoxiana. After this, real authority in the western Chagatai lands often shifted from Chinggisid khans to military strongmen (amirs), with khans increasingly ruling in name only.
During the 1340s, plague outbreaks spread across long-distance trade routes, including Silk Road networks linking Central Asia with the wider world. The resulting disruption added stress to already-fragmented politics and economies in the former Chagatai territories.
In 1347, the eastern part of the Chagatai realm separated as Moghulistan, centered in the Ili region and areas north of the Tian Shan. The split reflected the growing gap between eastern steppe politics and western, more urban Transoxiana.
Tughlugh Timur became khan in Moghulistan in 1347 and later asserted wider authority over Chagatai lands around 1360–1363. His reign is often treated as the last major attempt to hold the Chagatai realm together before regional powers and new dynasties took over.
By the 1370s, Timur (Tamerlane) emerged as the dominant military and political force in Transoxiana, reducing remaining Chagatai khans to symbolic status. This shift marked the end of Mongol-Chagatai rule as the main governing power in much of Central Asia and the transition toward Timurid rule.
