Large burial mounds (kurgans) in the Tuva region show that mounted pastoral elites were already organizing labor, moving long distances, and sharing a recognizable material culture across the steppe. These networks helped connect metalworking, horse gear, and prestige goods across Inner Asia long before written “Silk Road” records.
The Pazyryk culture (roughly 6th–3rd centuries BCE) left well-preserved kurgan burials in the Altai region, including textiles, horse equipment, and imported objects. Finds like these show how pastoral mobility and caravan traffic linked steppe zones to nearby agricultural oases, creating early trade corridors through mountain passes.
By the late 3rd–early 2nd century BCE, the Xiongnu built a large confederation that dominated much of the eastern steppe. Their power affected trade and diplomacy between China and Inner Asia, helping shape routes, tribute exchanges, and the movement of horses and other steppe products.
In 138 BCE, the Han envoy Zhang Qian traveled toward Central Asia and returned with reports about routes, peoples, and potential alliances. UNESCO notes this expedition is often treated as a foundation point for early Silk Road connections, which soon expanded long-distance exchange across Central Asia.
After defeats by the Xiongnu, the Yuezhi moved west into Sogdiana and Bactria in the 2nd century BCE. This migration helped remake the political map of Central Asia and influenced which cities and corridors became safer or more profitable for trade between steppe, oasis, and South Asian regions.
From about the 1st century BCE into the early medieval period, Sogdian trading communities linked oasis cities (such as around Samarkand and Bukhara) with steppe routes and markets farther east and west. Their caravans and diaspora settlements helped standardize practices for long-distance trade, credit, and communication along multiple routes.
In the mid-6th century, the Göktürks (First Turkic Khaganate) replaced earlier steppe powers and expanded across Inner Asia. Their growth mattered for trade because controlling steppe corridors and key passes could protect caravans—or extract taxes and tribute from them.
In 568, a Turkic delegation reached Constantinople, seeking trade and political cooperation against shared rivals. Such diplomacy shows that steppe empires were not isolated: they negotiated directly with major settled states to influence the flow of high-value goods moving across Central Asia.
The Türgesh emerged as an independent power in 699 and fought to hold strategic cities like Suyab and Taraz in the Semirechye (Zhetysu) region. This area mattered because it sat between steppe pasturelands and the oasis corridor toward Transoxiana, influencing who could protect or profit from caravan traffic.
In 751, Abbasid and Tang forces (with local allies) fought near Talas (around modern Taraz). Modern scholarship commonly links the longer-term decline of Tang power in Central Asia more to later events, but Talas still marks a major episode in the struggle over frontier influence that affected trade security and alliances.
By the mid-10th century, the Kara-Khanids converted to Islam, with later reports of a large-scale conversion around 960. Religious change mattered for trade networks because it strengthened ties with other Islamic regions, influenced law and taxation, and helped integrate steppe and oasis societies through shared institutions and scholarship.
In 1040, the Seljuqs defeated the Ghaznavids at the Battle of Dandānqān, gaining control in Khorasan. Shifts like this changed who governed major cities and routes at the edge of Central Asia, affecting tolls, security arrangements, and the movement of merchants and pastoral groups.
From 1219 to 1221, Mongol armies invaded the Khwarazmian Empire, capturing and devastating major trading cities, including Otrar. The conquest disrupted established urban-commercial systems even as it later helped bring large parts of Central Asia under a single overarching political order.
After Genghis Khan’s death, Central Asia became the core of the Chagatai Khanate, one of the Mongol successor states. The khanate connected nomadic governance traditions with the needs of oasis cities, shaping how taxes, protection, and permissions worked for people moving along steppe routes and through caravan towns.
In the 13th and 14th centuries, Mongol power created a period of relatively safer long-distance movement across much of Eurasia, often called the Pax Mongolica. With fewer border conflicts across huge distances, merchants and envoys could travel more reliably, and information and technologies spread faster.
In the mid-1300s, plague spread widely across Eurasia, and UNESCO notes a major peak between 1347 and 1351, with movement along Silk Roads as a commonly cited pathway. Disease shocks, together with political fragmentation, weakened the stability that had supported steppe and caravan trade under Mongol-era integration.
By 1347 and the following decades, the Chagatai Khanate split and successor polities emerged, reflecting a broader breakup of Mongol-era unity in Central Asia. As large-scale political integration faded, the “single-system” feel of steppe and transcontinental caravan routes weakened, marking a clear transition away from the earlier Mongol-period peak.
