According to later Icelandic tradition (and supported broadly by archaeology), Norse settlers began permanent settlement in Iceland around this time. Iceland became a new North Atlantic hub, tied to Norway, the British Isles, and later Greenland, showing how Viking expansion included colonization as well as raiding. These settlements extended Scandinavian language and law into new regions.
King Alfred of Wessex defeated a Viking army led by Guthrum, stopping a full takeover of southern England. The victory forced negotiation and helped stabilize a frontier between Alfred’s territory and Viking-controlled regions. It became a key moment in the shift from pure conquest attempts to mixed warfare, settlement, and diplomacy.

Tree-ring dating tied to a known 993 radiocarbon spike identified Norse woodcutting at L’Anse aux Meadows in AD 1021. This provides a precise date for Viking-era presence in North America and confirms that Scandinavian voyages crossed the Atlantic from Greenland. The site is best understood as a base for exploration and resource gathering rather than a long-lived colony.
An invading Norwegian army led by Harald Hardrada, supported by Tostig Godwinson, was defeated by King Harold Godwinson in northern England. The battle is often treated as the end of the last major Viking attempt to win the English throne by force. Together with events later in 1066, it marks a clear closing point for the classic Viking Age raid-and-conquest era in western Europe.
A seaborne raiding force attacked the monastery on Lindisfarne off northeast England. The event shocked Christian Europe because monasteries were wealthy but lightly defended, and reports emphasized killing and enslaving.
