Mastabas become standard Early Dynastic elite tombs
Labels: Mastaba, Early Dynastic, MudbrickAfter the unification of Egypt, many officials were buried in mastabas—rectangular, flat-roofed tomb superstructures built mainly of mudbrick. These tombs developed as part of a new state society where rank and office were expressed through planned cemeteries near key political centers. In many cases, the burial chamber was underground, reached by a shaft, while the above-ground structure supported offerings and memorial rituals.
