Great Sphinx carved from Giza bedrock
Labels: Great Sphinx, Giza Necropolis, Khafre PyramidDuring Egypt’s Old Kingdom, builders carved a massive lion-bodied, human-headed statue directly out of limestone bedrock at Giza and cut an enclosure trench around it. Most scholars link the Sphinx and its surrounding temples to the pyramid complex of the 4th Dynasty king Khafre, though some debate remains. The project anchored the Sphinx physically and symbolically within the royal necropolis landscape.
