During Egypt’s Old Kingdom, builders carved a massive lion-bodied, human-headed statue directly out of limestone bedrock at Giza and cut an enclosure trench around it. Most scholars link the Sphinx and its surrounding temples to the pyramid complex of the 4th Dynasty king Khafre, though some debate remains. The project anchored the Sphinx physically and symbolically within the royal necropolis landscape.
Over time, windblown desert sands repeatedly accumulated in the enclosure, at times covering much of the body up to the neck. This cycle of burial and clearing helped shape later religious attention to the Sphinx as a sacred monument tied to the rising sun (often called Harmachis/Horemakhet). The enclosure’s environment became part of the Sphinx’s long-term preservation challenge.
In the early New Kingdom, Pharaoh Thutmose IV ordered the Sphinx cleared of sand and set up the granite “Dream Stele” between its paws. The inscription presents the Sphinx as a divine power that could grant kingship, linking restoration work to royal legitimacy. This episode is one of the clearest ancient records of deliberate conservation at the site.
After Thutmose IV, later generations again faced encroaching sands and the need for maintenance. The pattern was cyclical: sand reduced visibility and access, then clearing or repair brought the monument back into public and religious life. This long-term cycle helps explain why evidence of multiple interventions appears across later periods.
In Egypt’s Late Period, a stela now called the “Inventory Stela” was created for the Temple of Isis area at Giza and includes references to the Sphinx. Although it is much later than the Old Kingdom, the stela became important in modern debates because it was sometimes read as claiming very ancient origins for nearby monuments. Egyptologists generally date the stela itself to the 26th Dynasty, so it is not direct Old Kingdom evidence.
European travelers’ drawings became a key record for later damage debates. Frederik Louis Norden’s detailed Sphinx drawing, published in 1755 from his earlier travel work, depicts the Sphinx without a nose. This evidence is often cited to challenge the popular claim that Napoleon’s soldiers destroyed the nose in 1798.
After Napoleon’s campaign brought a large team of scholars and artists to Egypt, their work was published as Description de l’Égypte over the early 19th century. Illustrations from this project also depict the Sphinx without a nose, reinforcing that the damage predates or at least was not uniquely caused by the French troops. The publication helped spread the Sphinx’s image widely in Europe.
Giovanni Battista Caviglia led a major clearance around the Sphinx in the late 1810s, uncovering parts that had been buried by sand for generations. During this work, the Dream Stele between the paws was rediscovered and brought back to scholarly attention. The clearance marked an early shift toward systematic archaeological work at the monument.
In 1858, archaeologist Auguste Mariette discovered the Inventory Stela at Giza during work connected with the Temple of Isis area. The find added an important Late Period text to the site’s record and later became part of arguments about how ancient Egyptians themselves described Giza monuments. It also shows how 19th-century excavations began building large collections of artifacts tied to Giza’s history.
From 1925 to 1936, Émile Baraize directed major clearance and restoration work, removing large amounts of sand and excavating around and within the Sphinx area. By the mid-1930s, the Sphinx was fully exposed, making detailed study and long-term conservation planning more feasible. This work helped redefine the Sphinx from a partly buried landmark to a fully visible monument needing continuous care.
With the Sphinx fully exposed, erosion and stone decay became more visible and urgent. Conservators increasingly faced the problem that repairs could unintentionally harm the original limestone if materials or methods were poorly matched. The site’s story in the 20th century increasingly centered on managing damage while keeping the monument accessible.
Restoration work carried out between 1980 and 1987 later drew criticism for removing original stones, replacing them, and using cement in ways seen as inappropriate for the monument. The controversy highlighted how conservation choices can change the Sphinx’s surface and affect long-term stability. It also pushed Egyptian authorities toward more careful, research-based conservation approaches.
Later conservation campaigns aimed to undo some problematic earlier work, including removing cement and rethinking how to stabilize weakened areas. These projects reflect a broader 20th-century shift in heritage management: favoring compatible materials, careful documentation, and minimal intervention where possible. By the end of the century, the Sphinx’s condition and treatment had become a sustained, institutional responsibility rather than an occasional excavation-driven effort.
