In 480 BCE, Persian forces sacked Athens and damaged or destroyed major religious buildings on the Acropolis. The ruins and debris left behind helped shape later rebuilding decisions and created the context for a new major temple project in the next generation.
In 447 BCE, Athenian leader Pericles began building the Parthenon as part of a larger rebuilding plan on the Acropolis. The new temple was dedicated to Athena and was meant to express Athens’ power, wealth, and civic identity after the Persian Wars.
The architects Ictinus and Callicrates are traditionally credited with designing and directing the Parthenon’s construction. Sculptor Phidias oversaw the overall artistic program, linking architecture and sculpture into a single visual message about the city and its patron goddess.
By 438 BCE, the Parthenon was dedicated, and the monumental cult statue of Athena Parthenos (made with gold and ivory over a wooden core) was unveiled inside. Even after dedication, work on decorative elements continued, showing that the building’s meaning depended on both structure and sculpture.
Sculpting and decorative work continued after the dedication and is commonly dated through about 432 BCE. The friezes, metopes, and pediments helped communicate shared myths and civic rituals, turning the temple into a public statement as well as a sacred space.
In Late Antiquity, the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church, with major interior changes to fit Christian worship. This shift shows how the building’s meaning could change while its prominent location and prestige continued to matter.
After the Ottoman period began in Athens, the Parthenon was adapted for Islamic worship and became a mosque, including changes such as a minaret (built from an earlier tower). The conversion reflected a new political and religious order, while keeping the structure in active use.
During the siege of the Acropolis in September 1687, a Venetian shell struck the Parthenon, which was being used as a gunpowder store. The resulting explosion destroyed much of the roof and severely damaged walls and columns, creating the ruin-like condition that dominates its appearance today.
From 1801 to 1812, agents working for Thomas Bruce (Lord Elgin) removed a large share of surviving Parthenon sculptures and shipped them to Britain. These removals, made while the Ottomans controlled Athens, later became central to debates about cultural heritage and ownership.
In 1816, after a parliamentary inquiry, the British government acquired Elgin’s collection and placed it under the British Museum’s care. This decision helped fix the long-term reality that major parts of the Parthenon’s sculptural program would be split between Athens and London.
In 1975, Greece created the Committee for the Conservation of the Acropolis Monuments (ESMA), helping launch a long-term, research-based restoration program. The work aimed to repair war damage and also undo harm caused by earlier restorations, using methods designed to be carefully documented and reversible.
In 1987, UNESCO added the Acropolis of Athens to the World Heritage List, recognizing its outstanding universal value. This global status strengthened international attention to conservation decisions and increased the visibility of debates about the Parthenon’s protection and presentation.
The Acropolis Museum opened to the public on 2009-06-20 near the Acropolis. Its Parthenon-focused displays were designed to present surviving sculptures together as clearly as possible and to highlight which pieces are missing or held elsewhere.
By late 2025, the Parthenon’s restoration continued to advance, including periods when scaffolding was briefly removed during transitions between work phases. Reports in 2025 indicated that the current phase was expected to conclude in 2026, marking a major milestone in a conservation effort that has run since 1975.
