In 1534, Spaniards founded Quito on the ruins of an Inca settlement and quickly began building monasteries and churches. These early religious complexes set the physical and institutional framework for later Baroque church programs that blended European designs with local materials and labor.
Construction at the San Francisco convent and church began soon after Quito’s foundation and continued for more than a century, creating a major Franciscan center in the city. Over time, the complex accumulated Baroque features and a rich decorative program, helping define what later became known as the “Baroque school of Quito.”
Ground was broken for Cusco’s cathedral in 1559 on the main plaza, using stonework that symbolized the new colonial order in the former Inca capital. Its long construction period helped shape a regional pattern: large churches that combined multiple European styles and relied on local artisans for execution.
The Jesuits established their major church in Cusco on or near an earlier Inca palace setting, signaling the order’s growing influence in the Andes. The site later became a key stage for Andean Baroque after earthquake damage forced major rebuilding and stylistic renewal.
In 1605, Jesuit architects began the Church of La Compañía de Jesús in Quito. The project eventually became a landmark of “Quitoan Colonial Baroque,” especially known for its carved volcanic-stone façade and intensely ornamented interior.
By 1606, the main nave and façade of the church of San Pedro Apóstol in Andahuaylillas were completed. Its modest exterior and richly didactic interior decoration became a template for rural church programs that used images to teach Christian doctrine to Indigenous communities.
In the 1620s, painter Luis de Riaño and Indigenous collaborators produced major fresco cycles inside Andahuaylillas, including a famous set dated 1626. These large murals linked European religious imagery with local audiences, using visual storytelling as a practical tool of evangelization.
On March 31, 1650, a devastating earthquake damaged most of Cusco’s temples and many buildings. The reconstruction period that followed encouraged sturdier forms, new façades, and intensified decoration—conditions that helped Baroque architecture spread across the southern Andes.
Cusco Cathedral’s main construction phase was completed in 1654, and the building soon became a major repository of colonial art and craftsmanship. Its mix of Renaissance, late Gothic, and Baroque elements illustrates how Andean cities often built in layered styles rather than a single “pure” European model.
In 1668, Cusco’s cathedral received its definitive consecration, marking the institutional and ceremonial completion of the city’s central church. This solidified the cathedral’s role as an anchor for surrounding church projects, workshops, and religious festivals that supported regional Baroque programs.
After severe damage in the 1650 earthquake, the Jesuit church in Cusco was rebuilt and completed in 1673. The renewed building became an influential Baroque model in the southern Andes, especially through its prominent plaza façade and its demonstration of how European church forms could be adapted locally.
Construction of the Basilica of La Merced in Quito began in 1701, showing how large-scale church projects continued into the 18th century. Its later features, including a major carved altarpiece, reflect the expanded role of specialized artists and workshops in Quito’s decorative Baroque tradition.
La Merced was consecrated in 1737, indicating it had become fully functional as a key urban religious space. The consecration highlights how Quito’s church network served both worship and social organization, with interiors designed to teach, impress, and guide public devotion.
The Church of La Compañía in Quito was completed in 1765 after a very long construction period. Its finished form became one of the best-known examples of Quito’s colonial Baroque, especially for the fusion of European composition with local carving traditions and volcanic-stone craftsmanship.
In 1978, UNESCO inscribed Quito’s historic center, citing the “Baroque school of Quito” and the city’s well-preserved colonial fabric. In 1983, UNESCO inscribed the City of Cusco, highlighting its Baroque churches and the fusion of Inca and Hispanic traditions—bringing international recognition to the long-term legacy of Andean Baroque church programs.
