After Afonso de Albuquerque’s 1510 conquest of Goa, Portuguese authorities and religious orders began establishing chapels that later framed Old Goa’s sacred topography, including the Chapel of St. Catherine (1510) commemorating the victory.
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary (Nossa Senhora do Rosário) was built in Old Goa in the 1540s. Though earlier than the mature Baroque phase, it became part of the later UNESCO-listed ensemble and provides a baseline for how Goan church architecture evolved toward more elaborate Mannerist and Baroque forms.
Work on the cathedral church (Sé Catedral de Santa Catarina) began in 1562, setting the stage for later 17th-century embellishment and the broader Baroque-era monumentalization of Old Goa’s ecclesiastical core.

The first stone of the Convent of Santa Monica was laid in 1606. As a major women’s monastic institution in Portuguese Goa, it contributed to the architectural and institutional landscape that surrounded Old Goa’s large Baroque-era church building campaigns.
The Se Cathedral was completed in 1619 and consecrated in 1640. Its monumental scale anchored Old Goa’s ecclesiastical center, alongside other major churches whose interiors increasingly adopted Baroque altars, carving, and spatial drama.
The Convent of Santa Monica was completed in 1627, and the attached church was consecrated the same year. The complex illustrates the mature institutional consolidation of Catholic Goa that paralleled the rise of Goan Baroque church art and architecture.
In the 17th century, malaria and cholera outbreaks severely affected Old Goa, accelerating decline and setting conditions in which major ecclesiastical monuments remained while much of the secular city diminished—shaping how Goan Baroque churches survived as dominant landmarks.
Theatines received permission to build a church and convent in 1655; the Church of St. Cajetan (also called Our Lady of Divine Providence) was completed in 1661. Often noted as inspired by St. Peter’s in Rome, it exemplifies high-style Baroque/Classicizing aspirations in Portuguese Goa.
A Franciscan church in Old Goa, originally consecrated in 1602, was replaced by the current structure erected in 1661. Its richly Baroque interior (notably the main altar) is frequently highlighted as characteristic of Goan ecclesiastical Baroque decoration.
In the 1830s, Portuguese anti-clerical policies led to the eviction of religious orders in Goa; the St. Augustine church complex was abandoned in 1835, contributing to its later ruin while other Baroque churches continued as key heritage monuments.
Old Goa remained the de jure capital until 1843, when the capital was shifted to Panjim (Panaji). This administrative move reinforced Old Goa’s transformation into a primarily ecclesiastical and monumental landscape dominated by its Portuguese-era churches.
UNESCO inscribed the “Churches and Convents of Goa” on the World Heritage List in 1986, recognizing their role in illustrating the evangelization of Asia and the dissemination of Manueline, Mannerist, and Baroque forms—providing global heritage framing for Goan Baroque ecclesiastical architecture.
