Following Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn’s election as Prince-Bishop of Würzburg (1719), Balthasar Neumann was commissioned to design a new city-center princely residence and oversee early construction, launching his central role in Würzburg’s High Baroque building program.
The foundation stone of the Würzburg Residence was laid on 22 May 1720, marking the formal start of construction on the major court project with which Neumann’s name became most closely associated.
Work began on the Schönbornkapelle (Schönborn Chapel) at Würzburg Cathedral in 1721. Neumann became a key contributor in shaping its Baroque central-plan design as it developed into the Schönborn family’s dynastic burial chapel.
Neumann traveled to Paris and Versailles (1723), where he met and consulted leading French architects (including Germain Boffrand and Robert de Cotte) about the Würzburg Residence and related commissions—an important channel for Franco-German Baroque exchange.
A new Baroque basilica for Münsterschwarzach Abbey—one of Neumann’s early major ecclesiastical commissions—was initiated with a documented foundation-laying on 17 June 1727, and the church was later dedicated in 1743.
Under Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn, Neumann was appointed director of major military, civic, and ecclesiastical construction across the Würzburg and Bamberg bishoprics—formalizing his authority over a wide High Baroque building portfolio.
After a slowdown under Christoph Franz von Hutten, large-scale work restarted under Friedrich Karl von Schönborn: construction resumed with the south block beginning in 1730, pushing the Residence toward its mature, internationally influenced form.
At Bruchsal Palace, Neumann provided a celebrated solution to a complex layout problem, building the palace’s grand staircase in 1731–1732—an influential demonstration of his spatial and engineering inventiveness in Baroque interior design.
Neumann designed and built Schloss Werneck (1733–1745) for Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn, extending the Würzburg court’s architectural program into a major suburban palace complex.
The Schönborn Chapel reached liturgical completion with its consecration in 1736, securing its role as a landmark of German Baroque sacred space and a prominent dynastic memorial for the Schönborn family.
In 1737, Neumann executed the Residence’s monumental main staircase, a centerpiece of the complex’s ceremonial sequence and one of the era’s most admired feats of Baroque spatial choreography.
Construction began in 1743 on Neumann’s famed pilgrimage church at Vierzehnheiligen (Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers). Its innovative, interlocking oval spatial scheme became a hallmark of German High Baroque/Rococo church design.
The Würzburg Residence was essentially constructed between 1720 and 1744, with Neumann acting as supervising court architect coordinating an international circle of designers and craftsmen; the project became a defining monument of German High Baroque court culture.
Plans by Neumann guided the new Baroque abbey complex at Neresheim, with the overall building campaign dated 1747–1792 (construction beginning later in 1750). The project shows his influence extending beyond Franconia into southwest Germany.
Neumann’s plans for the Käppele (Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Heimsuchung) were realized with construction in 1748–1750 on the Nikolausberg overlooking Würzburg, adding a major late-Baroque/Rococo pilgrimage site to his Würzburg-area works.
Neumann died in Würzburg on 19 August 1753, leaving major projects (including parts of Vierzehnheiligen and Neresheim) to be completed by successors while his designs continued shaping the mature German High Baroque.
