Beijing was selected to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, triggering a large program of new venues and urban infrastructure. This decision set the schedule and political urgency that shaped the design-and-build timeline for the Olympic Green and its landmark buildings.
After an international bidding process, the design for Beijing National Stadium was awarded to Herzog & de Meuron, working with engineering firm Arup and Chinese design partners. The concept’s interlaced steel exterior became the defining architectural identity of the Olympic Green.
The National Aquatics Centre design—later nicknamed the “Water Cube”—was chosen through an international competition. Its bubble-like façade used ETFE cushions (a lightweight plastic film system) to create a bright, insulated building skin and a distinctive nighttime glow.
Work began on two centerpiece venues of the Olympic Green: the National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) and the National Aquatics Centre (Water Cube). Starting both projects at the end of 2003 reflected the compressed schedule needed to complete testing before the 2008 Games.
The Olympic Green opened as Beijing’s dedicated Olympic Park area, organizing major venues, public space, and circulation in one district. This provided the setting in which the Bird’s Nest, Water Cube, and other facilities were planned to work as a coordinated ensemble.
Construction began on Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital International Airport, a major transport project tied to Olympic readiness. The expansion was designed to handle large visitor flows and to present a modern international gateway alongside the new Olympic architecture.
Construction of the National Stadium was paused during a broader review of Olympic projects that raised concerns about cost and structural safety. The pause became a turning point, leading to design changes intended to reduce expense and complexity without abandoning the stadium’s iconic outer steel form.
Plans for an expensive retractable roof were dropped as part of a cost-cutting redesign, while the stadium’s “nest” lattice remained. This change reduced steel use and simplified construction, shaping the final silhouette that became globally recognized.
Construction began on the National Indoor Stadium, another major Olympic Green venue used for indoor sports. Its design and delivery show how the Olympic building program extended beyond the two headline icons to create a complete competition campus.
The National Indoor Stadium opened ahead of the Games, enabling trial competitions and operational testing. Opening venues early was critical for training staff, testing crowd movement, and confirming broadcast and event readiness.
The National Aquatics Centre was officially opened and delivered for use, just before major pre-Olympic test events. Its completion marked the end of a fast-track build and showcased the ETFE “bubble” façade as a new reference point for contemporary stadium-envelope design.
Terminal 3 began trial operations, expanding airport capacity shortly before the Olympics. The opening helped manage the expected surge of international arrivals and linked Beijing’s Olympic-era architecture with major transport upgrades.
