Archizoom and Superstudio presented “Superarchitettura I” in Pistoia, an exhibition often treated as a founding moment for Italian Radical Design. It used Pop-inspired imagery and anti-conformist interiors to challenge the idea that “good design” should be neutral, rational, and purely functional. The show helped shift design debate toward critique of mass consumption and media culture.
A second “Superarchitettura” exhibition in Modena extended the Radical Design program from a single event into an ongoing cultural position. Archizoom and Superstudio used provocative installations to question modernist claims that better forms automatically create better lives. This continuation helped establish Florence and northern Italy as key centers for radical architecture and furniture experimentation.
Superstudio’s late-1960s work increasingly relied on photomontage (collaged photographic images) to make design arguments rather than proposing buildable projects. This approach treated architecture and furniture as part of a larger system of power, technology, and consumer desire. It also set up the group’s most famous critique: the Continuous Monument series.
Superstudio developed the Continuous Monument as a conceptual project showing an endless grid-like structure cutting across landscapes and cities. The point was not to propose a real megastructure, but to critique how modern planning and technology could flatten differences and turn the world into a single “system.” The images became an enduring symbol of Radical Design’s use of speculation as cultural criticism.
Archizoom’s No-Stop City proposed a city without traditional form—an endless, uniform field driven by infrastructure, consumption, and repetition. Like Superstudio’s grid, it used an extreme vision to expose the logic of industrial society and modern planning. Together, these projects helped redefine furniture and interiors as part of broader social and economic systems.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York opened “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape”, a major exhibition that framed Italian design as a live debate about everyday life, industry, and the home. By giving space to experimental and critical work, the show helped internationalize the ideas behind Radical Design. It also made “the domestic landscape” a serious subject for cultural institutions, not only for manufacturers.
Global Tools formed as an experimental education program described as a multidisciplinary school “without students or teachers.” It brought together figures and groups associated with Radical Architecture and related art movements to explore hands-on making, media, performance, and everyday practices. The project pushed Radical Design away from only objects and images, toward broader methods of learning and living.
After intense experimentation, Global Tools concluded, reflecting both the ambition and limits of radical “alternative institution” projects. Its end did not stop the movement, but it did push many designers toward new forms of practice—small-batch production, editions, exhibitions, and ironic re-use of historical styles. This transition helped set the stage for post-radical groups like Alchimia.
Studio Alchimia was founded in Milan by Alessandro Guerriero and Adriana Guerriero. The group became a key “post-radical” platform, using furniture, interiors, images, and performances to reject strict modernist rules. Alchimia helped move radical ideas from political critique toward experimentation with surface, symbolism, craft, and irony.
Alchimia presented its first furniture group in the exhibition “Bau.Haus uno”. The title deliberately referenced (and mocked) Bauhaus functionalism, signaling a turn toward ornament, quotation, and “anti-design” attitudes. This debut helped normalize the idea that furniture could be a critical and theatrical object—not only a rational product.
Alessandro Mendini designed the “Proust” armchair, a reworked historical chair covered in pointillist-style decoration. The piece became an icon of post-radical design by arguing that surface, memory, and visual culture matter as much as function. It also showed how Alchimia used “re-design” (transforming an existing type) as a method to challenge design values.
Designers and architects gathered in Ettore Sottsass’s Milan home for a meeting that became the starting point for Memphis. The group name was adopted during this early moment, tied to cultural references ranging from music to ancient history. This meeting set a new direction: bold form, color, and material choices as a deliberate break from sober modernist taste.
Ettore Sottsass designed the Carlton bookcase, which became one of the most recognizable Memphis works. It combined bright laminates and stacked geometric parts to blur the line between shelf and sculpture. Carlton helped define Memphis’s message that emotional impact and visual language can be central functions of furniture.
Memphis opened its first exhibition at the Arc ’74 gallery in Milan during design-week events, showing 55 pieces. The launch worked like a “happening,” presenting furniture and objects as cultural statements rather than quiet background products. The show quickly drew international attention and positioned Memphis as a leading expression of 1980s postmodern design.
Michele De Lucchi designed the First Chair, a Memphis work that circulated broadly compared with many limited-edition Memphis objects. Its simple geometry and strong colors carried the Memphis look into more accessible furniture production. The chair demonstrates a key tension of the period: turning radical aesthetics into items people could actually buy and use.
Andrea Branzi created works for the Animali Domestici (Domestic Animals) collection, blending natural materials like birch with industrial components. The pieces suggested a different future for interiors—less about perfect industrial order and more about symbolic, hybrid objects. This direction echoed Radical Design’s critique of mass production while reshaping it into collectible, edition-based design.
Memphis officially disbanded in 1988, bringing its initial, tightly linked phase to an end. The group’s short lifespan became part of its legacy: a burst of high-impact exhibitions and objects that changed design discourse more than it built a long-running business. Even after disbanding, the Memphis approach to color, pattern, and reference continued to influence late-20th-century interiors and product design.
