The U.S. National Bureau of Standards published IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) Version 1.0, an early neutral format for exchanging product geometry between different CAD systems. This mattered because industrial designers and engineers increasingly needed to share files across vendors and companies without redrawing everything.
Dassault Aviation created Dassault Systèmes to develop and sell 3D design software, helping move advanced CAD beyond single-company internal tools. This helped establish a major commercial CAD ecosystem that would later influence how complex consumer products, vehicles, and aircraft were designed.
CATIA grew out of Dassault’s internal work and became a commercial product when Version 1 was released as an add-on for CADAM. Its early strength in 3D surface modeling supported industries that needed smooth, complex shapes—an important capability for transportation and high-end industrial design.
Autodesk was founded in 1982 and focused on bringing CAD to less expensive computers. This shift mattered for industrial design because it helped expand CAD use from specialized, high-cost installations toward broader access in smaller firms and design teams.
AutoCAD was released in December 1982, showing that CAD could run on microcomputers rather than only on large systems. Even though it began as mostly 2D drafting, it helped normalize digital drawing workflows that later fed into 3D modeling adoption.
Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) was founded in 1985, aiming to commercialize parametric, feature-based 3D CAD (where changing a dimension updates related geometry). This approach fit industrial design and mechanical engineering needs because it made revisions faster and more consistent across parts and assemblies.
The Parasolid geometric modeling kernel was released, offering reusable “core” math and geometry functions (like Boolean operations) that CAD vendors could license. Shared kernels reduced the cost and risk of building solid-modeling CAD tools, which supported wider adoption of 3D CAD in product development.
PTC’s Pro/ENGINEER shipped as a commercial product in the late 1980s, widely recognized as a major early system for parametric, associative, feature-based solid modeling. This was a turning point because it strengthened the idea of a single, change-driven 3D model feeding drawings and manufacturing outputs.
The first version of the ACIS solid modeling kernel was released in 1989, giving software developers another widely licensable 3D geometry engine. Competing kernels (like ACIS and Parasolid) helped drive more CAD options and faster improvements in modeling tools used in product design.
In the mid-1990s, ISO published the initial releases of STEP (ISO 10303), building on earlier exchange efforts like IGES. STEP aimed to carry richer product definition data across systems, supporting more reliable sharing of 3D models in supply chains and multi-tool design workflows.
SolidWorks released its first product in November 1995, bringing parametric 3D CAD to the Windows desktop for many users. Lower-cost hardware and a familiar operating system helped more industrial design and engineering teams adopt 3D modeling as a practical daily tool.
Open CASCADE Technology was released in 1999 as an open-source 3D geometry and modeling toolkit. By lowering barriers for developers and smaller vendors, it supported experimentation and niche CAD applications that could connect to industrial design and manufacturing workflows.
Autodesk released Inventor in 1999 to compete in parametric 3D mechanical design, expanding Autodesk’s role beyond 2D drafting. This strengthened the trend toward mainstream, mid-market 3D CAD adoption, especially for companies that already relied on AutoCAD for drawings.
Autodesk created ShapeManager by forking ACIS source code (November 2001), and it became available in Inventor 5.3 (early 2002). Owning a core modeling kernel reduced dependence on a competitor-controlled supplier and helped Autodesk tune 3D modeling performance and features for manufacturing design users.
By the early 2000s, STEP-based exchange (along with other translators) supported more reliable sharing of 3D product models across CAD systems. This period marked a practical “end state” for 1970–2005 adoption: CAD was no longer just digital drafting, but a standard backbone for industrial design, engineering collaboration, and downstream manufacturing preparation.
