The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) sponsored a competition to promote “organic design” in home furnishings—design shaped by materials, structure, and purpose. The contest set the stage for new, modern furniture ideas that could be manufactured and sold at scale.
Charles and Ray Eames married in June 1941 and soon moved to Los Angeles. Working from a small apartment at first, they began hands-on experiments with molding plywood into complex curves—an early step toward their production-focused approach.
Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames won major awards in MoMA’s competition, helping introduce their ideas to a broad audience. Ray Kaiser (later Ray Eames) supported the work, and this project helped connect the people who would soon form the Eames partnership.
During World War II, the Eameses applied molded plywood techniques to a practical medical problem: rigid metal leg splints could worsen injuries during transport. Their lightweight molded plywood leg splint became an early, real-world test of designing for mass production and performance.
The Eames operation moved into the 901 Washington Boulevard space in Venice, California, which became the center of their design and production work. This studio model—research, prototyping, and communication under one roof—helped them take on larger industrial and media projects over time.
After years of prototyping, the Eames molded plywood chair series (including the DCW and LCW) was released in 1946 through the Evans Molded Plywood Company. The designs separated seat/back forms and used shock mounts, showing a repeatable, industrial method for comfort-oriented furniture.
In March 1946, MoMA hosted a focused furniture exhibition that presented Eames plywood and upholstered chair systems, plus testing devices used to demonstrate durability. The show helped connect the Eameses to Herman Miller, a relationship that would shape how their designs reached the public.
Charles and Ray Eames completed their home and studio as part of the Case Study House program, using off-the-shelf industrial materials in a modular steel-frame design. It became both a place to live and a working laboratory for prototyping, photography, film, and hosting collaborators.
The Eames molded fiberglass armchair reached the market in 1950 through Herman Miller, using reinforced plastic to create a single-piece shell. It expanded the Eames “one shell, many bases” idea and pushed American furniture toward new materials and high-volume manufacturing.
In 1951, Herman Miller introduced the Eames Wire Chair, translating the shell-chair concept into welded steel wire. Removable pads (including the “bikini” style) allowed comfort options while keeping the structure visible, supporting flexible use in homes and public settings.
The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman debuted in 1956, positioning molded plywood and leather in a higher-end product while still emphasizing comfort and careful engineering. Its prominent launch and continued production helped define mid-century American modern interiors.
The Eames Aluminum Group chairs arrived in 1958, using an aluminum frame with a tensioned seat and back rather than a molded shell. The approach influenced modern office seating by combining a light structure with a flexible, supportive sitting surface.
In 1959, Charles and Ray Eames presented “Glimpses of the U.S.A.” as a multi-screen film experience at the American National Exhibition in Moscow. The project showed how the Eames Office used media and exhibition design—alongside furniture—to communicate ideas to mass audiences.
In March 1961, the Eames Office opened Mathematica—an interactive exhibition sponsored by IBM for the California Museum of Science and Industry. It used hands-on displays and graphics to explain math concepts in plain, visual ways, marking a major expansion of the office’s work beyond furniture.
In 1962, the Eames Office released tandem sling seating designed for heavy public use, first applied in major airport projects. The modular “bays” and durable materials reflected a shift toward systems design—solving comfort, maintenance, and crowd-flow needs at scale.
In 1968, the Eameses completed a prototype film exploring scale by zooming outward to space and inward to microscopic structure in steps of ten. It showed how the office used filmmaking as a design tool—building understanding through clear visuals and careful sequencing.
In 1977, the Eames Office released the finished version of Powers of Ten, updating the concept and visuals as scientific knowledge advanced. The film became a widely used educational resource and a lasting example of the Eames approach: design as a way to explain complex ideas clearly.
Charles Eames died in 1978, bringing a major phase of the Eames Office’s design production to an end. By that point, the office had helped reshape modern furniture manufacturing and also broadened what “industrial design” could include—exhibitions, films, and public communication.
