Florence began building Santa Maria del Fiore to replace the older cathedral (Santa Reparata). The foundation stone was laid on this date, launching a major Gothic building campaign that would continue for well over a century.
Arnolfo di Cambio served as the cathedral’s first leading architect (capomaestro), establishing the initial Gothic conception that later generations would expand and modify—especially at the east end and the vast crossing planned for a dome.

The plague outbreak in 1348 severely affected labor and finances across Italy, and it is widely noted as a major interruption to cathedral-related work in this period.
Francesco Talenti completed the bell tower, giving it its present overall form and further consolidating the Gothic character of the cathedral precinct through coordinated marble revetment and layered vertical stages.
With the new structure sufficiently advanced, the older cathedral of Santa Reparata—which had remained in use during much of the construction—was pulled down, marking a decisive transition from medieval continuity to the new monumental scheme.
A formal competition was announced to solve the unprecedented engineering problem of vaulting the huge octagonal crossing—an inflection point where late-Gothic ambition demanded new structural thinking.
Construction of Brunelleschi’s dome began, famously inaugurated by a banquet recorded in the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore’s documentation. The project’s self-supporting method signaled a decisive shift toward Renaissance engineering and architectural imagination.
Pope Eugene IV consecrated the cathedral on Florence’s New Year (per the Florentine calendar). The celebration underscored the dome’s near-completion and the building’s transformation from a Gothic mega-project into a cornerstone of the emerging Renaissance cityscape.
Work on the dome was celebrated as completed in late August, with ceremonies connected to final masonry milestones and formal recognition in the Opera’s documentation—closing the 1296–1436 arc from Gothic planning to Renaissance realization.
