Sculpture for Chartres Cathedral’s west entrance (the Royal Portal) was produced in the mid-12th century, establishing the Gothic portal formula of column-statues, archivolts, and tympana organized as a coherent theological program that later cathedral façades would expand.
The Royal Portal’s three tympana (Incarnation, Apocalypse/Christ in Majesty, Ascension) and jamb figures (prophets/precursors) articulated a typological relationship between Old and New Testaments, becoming a major reference point for later 13th-century portal programs.
A catastrophic fire in 1194 destroyed much of the earlier structure but left key parts—especially the crypt and portions of the west front—intact. The subsequent rebuilding campaign created the architectural setting for Chartres’s great 13th-century transept portal sculpture programs.
Work on the north transept’s central portal (“Triumph/Coronation of the Virgin” program) began in the early 13th century; early figures (around 1205–1210) show a move beyond rigid columnar relief toward more fully modeled bodies and increasingly varied drapery conventions.
The north transept portal’s iconography was organized around the Church and salvation history (including precursors of Christ, Creation imagery, and the Virgin’s crowning), demonstrating the encyclopedic scope typical of mature Gothic portal programs at Chartres.
The south transept central portal at Chartres, devoted to the Last Judgment, was carved around 1210. Its imagery (Christ as Judge, the Blessed and Damned, apostles and intercessors) shows how Chartres developed distinct thematic programs for each transept façade.
After a fire in 1210, Reims began a new cathedral campaign (cornerstone laid in 1211). The project’s later west-front portals would become a key site for the development of more animated, naturalistic Gothic figural style.
The west façade and its three portals at Amiens were begun around 1220, providing a large, unified architectural frame for an ambitious sculptural program that would connect portal imagery (Virgin, local saints, Last Judgment) to the building’s liturgical and civic functions.
The central portal at Amiens features the Beau Dieu (Christ) trumeau figure, blessing and holding a book, a signature example of early-13th-century portal sculpture realism and an image designed to confront and instruct the viewer at the threshold.
In 1230 the chapter acquired terrain for Reims’s western façade, an administrative step preceding the major façade/portal campaign in which Reims would become a benchmark for sculptural innovation and courtly refinement.
Amiens’s west façade was constructed largely in a single major campaign (c. 1220–1236), an unusually unified build that helped maintain stylistic coherence across its portal sculpture ensembles as the façade took shape.
Among Reims’s most famous portal sculptures, the Smiling Angel (part of the Annunciation ensemble) was carved between about 1236 and 1245, exemplifying Reims’s heightened naturalism, expressive faces, and greater independence of figures from architectural supports.
By about 1240 Amiens had finished the level of the rose window, while the portal sculpture continued to function as the façade’s primary didactic and ceremonial interface—linking large-scale architectural completion to ongoing sculptural emphasis.
Work on the western façade at Reims began around 1252. This initiated the principal phase for the grand portal settings that would host some of the most influential mid-13th-century Gothic sculpture in France.
Reims’s western façade portals were completed after 1260, marking the close of the principal mid-13th-century phase of its portal sculpture program—an endpoint often used to frame the Chartres–Amiens–Reims sequence of major French Gothic portal innovation.
