Leaders of the cathedral community at Old Sarum sought a safer, better-supplied site in the river valley below. Pope Honorius III issued a papal bull allowing the move, creating the legal and religious basis for a new cathedral building campaign at what became Salisbury (New Sarum).
On 28 April 1220, the foundation stones for the new cathedral were ceremonially blessed and laid on the new riverside site. This date is the traditional start of Salisbury Cathedral’s main Early English Gothic construction phase, planned as a largely unified project rather than centuries of additions.
Builders focused early work on the east end, completing what is now called the Trinity Chapel by 1225. Finishing this area first helped the cathedral begin regular worship while the rest of the structure continued to rise westward.
In 1226, the remains of Osmund (an early bishop associated with Old Sarum) were moved to the new cathedral. This “translation” of relics strengthened continuity between the old and new sites and helped establish the spiritual identity of the new building.
On 30 January 1227, King Henry III issued a charter confirming the cathedral’s translation from Old Sarum to the new site. Royal backing mattered because it reinforced the church’s rights and helped secure the stability needed for a long, expensive construction effort.
After the first chapel, work advanced through the choir area and the eastern transepts (the arms near the altar end). Completing these spaces improved the cathedral’s ability to host daily worship and processions while construction continued toward the nave.
Salisbury’s main fabric was built quickly by medieval standards, allowing a consistent Early English Gothic look. Key features include pointed arches and lancet windows (tall, narrow windows with pointed tops), which became hallmarks of the style in England.
From the late 1230s into the 1250s, builders completed the main transepts and the nave, extending the church’s interior to its full length. This phase created the large congregational space and the familiar long westward procession route typical of Gothic cathedrals.
In 1258, Salisbury Cathedral was consecrated (formally dedicated for sacred use), marking the completion of the core 1220–1258 building campaign. This ceremony signaled that the major worship spaces—nave, transepts, and choir—were finished and fully functional.
Because most of the cathedral was completed in roughly 38 years, its architecture shows unusual consistency compared with many English cathedrals. That unity is a major reason Salisbury is often used to explain Early English Gothic design and construction practices.
