Political pressure on the modernist school intensified after local election gains by the Nazi Party. On 22 August 1932, the Dessau city council decided to close the Bauhaus as of 1 October 1932, ending its municipal support. This decision set the stage for the Bauhaus’s last effort to survive outside government funding.
Director Ludwig Mies van der Rohe responded to the Dessau closure by trying to “de-politicize” the school and narrow its focus toward architecture. He prepared to reconstitute the Bauhaus as a privately run institute, relying in part on licensing income and existing salary agreements. This was a strategic shift: survival through private organization rather than city sponsorship.
The Bauhaus in Dessau ceased teaching on 1 October 1932 under political pressure and the loss of local funding. Closure in Dessau forced the school’s teachers and remaining students to decide whether to disperse or relocate. The choice to relocate created the Bauhaus’s final, Berlin-based chapter.
In October 1932, Mies reopened the Bauhaus in Berlin in an abandoned telephone factory site in the Steglitz area (often described with the Birkbuschstraße address). The institution now operated as a private school, commonly described as a “Free Teaching and Research Institute.” The move marked a last attempt to keep Bauhaus teaching and design work going under worsening political conditions.
In Berlin, the Bauhaus operated under tighter financial and political limits than it had in Weimar or Dessau. Under Mies, instruction emphasized architecture and foundational work that supported building design, rather than broader workshop production. This narrowing of purpose reflected both Mies’s priorities and the need to appear less politically controversial to authorities.
After Adolf Hitler became chancellor in late January 1933, the political environment for experimental art and architecture institutions became much more hostile. The Bauhaus in Berlin, already operating privately and cautiously, faced heightened risk from police actions and ideological demands. The school’s survival increasingly depended on whether it could meet political conditions without abandoning its identity.
On 11 April 1933, authorities searched the Bauhaus premises in Berlin and sealed the building. Reports from the Bauhaus-Archiv note that 32 students were temporarily detained during this action. The raid disrupted teaching and signaled that the school’s continued operation would be controlled by the new regime.
On 20 July 1933, the conference of teaching staff decided to close the Bauhaus. This vote effectively ended the institution rather than accepting political conditions that would have reshaped it into a state-approved school. The decision is widely treated as the formal endpoint of the Bauhaus as a functioning educational institution.
The 1932–1933 Berlin period is now commonly described as the Bauhaus’s final year: a private restart, a political raid, and an institutional vote to dissolve. Museums and archives treat this sequence as the closing chapter that explains why the Bauhaus ended in Germany in 1933. At the same time, the shutdown is also presented as the beginning of a new, wider Bauhaus story carried by people and ideas beyond Germany.
After the April raid, the Gestapo communicated that reopening would only be possible under strict conditions. These included replacing some teachers and revising the curriculum to fit National Socialist ideology. The demands made clear that “reopening” would require the Bauhaus to give up core staff and educational principles.
After the closure, many well-known Bauhaus teachers and alumni left Germany in the following years. This migration helped move Bauhaus design and teaching ideas into new schools, studios, and universities abroad. The Berlin shutdown thus became a turning point: the end of the institution in Germany, but an expansion of its influence internationally.
The Berlin location where the Bauhaus made its last stand did not remain as a preserved campus. A commemorative plaque was later installed near Birkbuschstraße 49 to mark the school’s final place of activity. This public marker reflects how the short Berlin phase became central to the Bauhaus’s memory as a story of forced closure and cultural loss.
